Election 2022: EC extends roadshow ban, with some easing in rules

The new rules were announced following a meeting between the Election Commission and health and election officials from the 5 poll-bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Goa, and Uttarakhand.

Amid signals that the third wave of Covid-19 may be waning in many parts of India, the Election Commission eased some restrictions on campaigning for the upcoming polls.

However, the ban on roadshows, padyatras, cycle/bike/vehicle rallies, and processions was reportedly extended till February 11. The first phase of voting is set to take place on February 10.

The poll body has reportedly allowed relaxations for public meetings and door-to-door campaigning.

Up to 1,000 people or 50% capacity of venue are now reportedly permitted for public meetings of candidates in designated open spaces. Earlier, the maximum number allowed was 500. For indoor meetings, up to 500 people or 50% of the capacity of the venue are now allowed, against 300 earlier.

For door-to-door campaigning, the EC has reportedly permitted 20 people, excluding security. Earlier, the limit was 10.

The new rules were announced following a meeting between the Election Commission and health and election officials from the 5 poll-bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Goa, and Uttarakhand.


The elections will begin on February 10, and results will be announced on March 10.
