With Akasa Air's 72-plane order, Indian airlines have more than 1100 planes on order

The country's airline industry is poised for expansion with more than 1,100 planes on order by various domestic carriers. After Air India placed an order for a total of 470 planes with Airbus and Boeing, budget airline Akasa Air will place a "substantially" large order for new narrowbody jets this year.

According to reports, Akasa Air, which launched services in August last year, has placed an order for 72 Boeing 737 Max planes.

The airline is looking to capitalise on booming demand at home and begin international flights, the company's founder and CEO Vinay Dube told Reuters.

The order is likely to be made before the end of this year and will be for narrowbody planes.
