Startup To Scaleup: Spotlight on Zoff Foods, that’s rewriting India’s ‘spice story’

Spices hold a profound cultural and culinary significance in India, celebrated for their diverse flavors and aromatic profiles, making India a global hub for spice varieties.

In a recent interview with Avni Raja from editorji, Akash Agrawal, Co-Founder of Zoff Foods, discussed the business of spices. Established in 2020, Zoff is an Indian brand dedicated to crafting high-quality spices and pantry essentials. They meticulously source ingredients from different regions across India to curate authentic spice blends and whole spices that enhance culinary experiences.

HOW ZOFF FOODS ENSURES PRODUCT QUALITY

Talking about food quality, Agrawal highlighted the company's commitment to ensuring product quality through innovative practices. "Our focus area has been spice mixing technology," Agrawal emphasized. "We utilize 'Cool Grind' technology for grinding spices, which preserves their flavor and aroma effectively."

He further elaborated, "To enhance convenience for our customers, we package our spices in zip-lock pouches, ensuring freshness and ease of use."

ZOFF FOODS’ BIGGEST CHALLENGES

When asked about the challenges, Agrawal said we operate in a crowded spice segment. "Initially, we focused on e-commerce as our primary sales channel." he added.

He also said, "The spice segment exhibits high brand loyalty, posing a challenge in attracting repeat customers."

"One of our key challenges was encouraging consumers to try our products initially," Agrawal emphasized. "Despite these hurdles, we've successfully reached one million consumers within six years."

He acknowledged, "Securing shelf space and convincing retailers for offline sales remains a persistent challenge."

THE SPICE ADULTERATION ROW

When discussing the recent controversies surrounding MDH and Everest masalas, Agrawal emphasized the variation in food safety standards between countries. He pointed out India's recent efforts to strengthen its food safety regulations.

Agrawal also underscored the critical need for consumer awareness regarding spice quality, stressing the importance of informed purchasing decisions.

He also highlighted the widespread impact of adulteration concerns on stakeholders within the industry, emphasizing the necessity for stringent food safety measures and consumer education.
