Salmonella in children linked to the maker of popular Kinder Joy

World health organisation has notified of a cluster of salmonella food poisoning in eleven European countries, linked to popular “Kinder” chocolate products produced in Belgium.

According to reports, at least 151 people, mostly young children, have fallen ill with diarrhea and vomiting after eating Kinder chocolate eggs made at a Ferrero Corporate plant in Belgium's Arlon.

Several Kinder chocolate products, including the popular Kinder Eggs, had already been recalled across Europe, US and Canada due to the outbreak across several European countries.

What is salmonella?

The salmonella bacteria can cause serious and severe infections, especially in children or elderly people and others with weak immune systems.

Named after the American veterinarian who helped discover the bacteria, Daniel Elmer Salmon, salmonella often causes mild illness but can be life-threatening in extreme cases.
