Foxconn India excludes married women from employment at Tamil Nadu plant: Report

Foxconn India systematically excludes married women from jobs at its iPhone assembly plant in Tamil Nadu, citing their greater family responsibilities compared to unmarried women, according to an investigation by Reuters.

The report revealed that married women were barred from entering the premises and questioned about their marital status by security guards, in violation of Apple’s and Foxconn’s anti-discrimination policies.

According to sources quoted by Reuters, former and current employees cited family duties, pregnancy, and higher absenteeism as reasons for this practice at the plant near Chennai.

The report noted that Foxconn relaxed these rules during high-production periods and labor shortages in Taiwan.

Additionally, some hiring agencies reportedly assisted women in concealing their marital status to secure employment.
