Major Wildfire in France Near Spanish Border: Fatality Reported

Paris, August 6 (AP): France is currently grappling with its largest wildfire of the summer, which rapidly spread Wednesday in a Mediterranean region near the Spanish border, resulting in one fatality, according to authorities.

Approximately 2,000 firefighters, supported by several water bomber aircraft, are actively fighting the blaze that ignited Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region. This rural, wooded area is known for its wineries.

The wildfire has remained 'very active' as of Wednesday, with unfavorable weather conditions further complicating efforts, stated the local administration in a release.

Tragically, one person was found dead in their home, nine others sustained injuries, including seven firefighters, and at least one individual is currently missing, the statement revealed.

The interior ministry confirmed that the fire has now engulfed over 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres), an area surpassing the size of the French capital.

Jacques Piraux, the mayor of Jonquières, reported that all village residents have been evacuated.

"It's a scene of sadness and desolation," he expressed to BFM TV after visiting the village Wednesday morning to evaluate the damage. "It looks like a lunar landscape, everything is burned. More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down. It's hellish."

Both residents and tourists in surrounding areas have been urged to stay indoors unless instructed by firefighters to evacuate. Two campsites have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

French Prime Minister François Bayrou is scheduled to visit the affected region Wednesday afternoon, his office confirmed.

Just last month, a wildfire that reached Marseille, France's second-largest city, left approximately 300 people injured.

Southern Europe has been hit with several large fires this season, with scientists cautioning that climate change is heightening the frequency and intensity of heat and droughts, thereby increasing the region's susceptibility to wildfires.

Europe holds the title of the world's fastest-warming continent, with temperatures rising at double the global average since the 1980s, as reported by the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.
