President Murmu Explores India-Angola Economic Opportunities

Luanda, Angola, Nov 10 (PTI): On Monday, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the potential for India and Angola to strengthen their economic partnership by exploring opportunities in sectors such as digital technology, defense, agriculture, and food processing during her state visit to the African nation.

While addressing the Angolan Parliament on the third day of her visit, President Murmu emphasized that trade and economic cooperation form a significant foundation for the bilateral relations between India and Angola.

"There are vast opportunities available for cooperation between the two countries in digital technology, defence, agriculture and food processing," she asserted. "Going forward, we are committed to take benefit of these possibilities to deepen our economic relations."

She further noted that the ongoing collaboration in the energy sector is strengthening the economic ties between the two countries. President Murmu's visit marks the first time an Indian President has visited Angola, a nation known for its energy resources and its location along the Atlantic Ocean.

Murmu also mentioned that the relationship between India and Angola is built on "mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit" for their people. She commended the Angolan Parliament for its inclusive governance, highlighting its 39 percent female representation as a testament to gender equality.

Highlighting similarities between the two nations, Murmu echoed India's recent legislative achievements with the enactment of a law ensuring one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.

As part of her visit, the President paid tribute to Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto, Angola's first President and a key figure in the country's fight for independence. She also toured the National Museum of military history in Luanda. This visit to Angola is part of President Murmu's four-day state engagement, which will be followed by a visit to Botswana from November 11-13.
