New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) - India is set to host this year's Chess World Cup from October 30 to November 27, with the specific host city to be announced later, the worldwide governing body for chess, FIDE, declared on Monday.
This prestigious tournament will feature 206 players who will not only vie for the esteemed title but also compete for qualification spots in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament. The last time India hosted this event was in 2002 in Hyderabad, where Viswanathan Anand took home the victory.
Players will face off in a knockout format where each losing competitor is eliminated from further contention.
"Over the years, the event has experimented with various formats, but since 2021, it has adopted a single-elimination format. Each matchup lasts three days, consisting of two classical games on the first two days and, if needed, tie-breaks on the third day," clarified FIDE.
During the initial round, the top 50 players automatically proceed to the next stage, while those seeded between 51 and 206 will compete in matchups based on the principle of the top half being paired against the reversed lower half.
"The top three finishers in the 2025 World Cup will secure direct spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, which ultimately selects the challenger for the World Chess Championship," FIDE added.
The 2023 World Cup runner-up, R Praggnanandhaa, reigning world champion D Gukesh, and Arjun Erigaisi, currently ranked world number five, are among the luminaries scheduled to compete. World number one Magnus Carlsen is also set to participate in this biennial event, having previously clinched the title in 2023.
India has recently become a hotbed for major chess events, having hosted the 2022 Chess Olympiad, Tata Steel Chess India, the 2024 World Junior U20 Championships, and the 5th leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix in April this year.
"We are thrilled to bring the FIDE World Cup 2025 to India, a nation with an entrenched love and enthusiasm for chess. Indian chess enthusiasts are always passionately engaged, and we anticipate substantial interest in the event both in-person and online," expressed FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky in a press release.

Thomas Tuchel admitted Jude Bellingham was "lucky" to escape a red card as England "struggled" to secure a 3-0 win against minnows Latvia on Monday. After being booked in the first half, Bellingham avoided a second yellow yard despite crunching into a crude challenge on Raivis Jurkovskis soon after the interval. England boss Tuchel responded by sending on Phil Foden to replace the midfielder moments later to ensure he was not given his marching orders.
"A bit lucky. We took straight away the decision to not take the risk and take him off," Tuchel said.
Leading through Reece James's superb first half free-kick, England were struggling to kill off stubborn Latvia when Bellingham was substituted.

Facing an unheralded Latvia team 136 places below them in FIFA's world rankings, Tuchel acknowledged England were far from convincing again after a lacklustre 2-0 win against Albania in his debut on Friday.
"It was not an easy match. We saw a lot of good things, created good chances. We needed a free-kick to unlock it. I'm happy with the attitude, energy and desire. We will get there," the German said.
"The second half we started to slow the game down and made little movement, which makes no sense. But the second goal was better as we showed acceleration from one of our sixes.
"We encourage everyone to have these late accelerations but we struggled a bit until the goal. I learn about the players and the game, so it is interesting."
'His quality is the highest level'
James's eye-catching first England start since September 2022 was the highlight of the evening for Tuchel.
The Chelsea right-back -- hampered by hamstring injuries for the last two seasons -- starred under Tuchel during the Blues' Champions League-winning campaign in 2021.
"I know Reece and the quality the boy has is amazing. He has every right to be proud and happy with his performance," Tuchel said.
"He is in excellent shape. He looks sharp and the quality there can be no doubt.
"If you play a dominant match like today, he can be a hybrid midfielder to help create an overload. His quality is at the highest level.&nbsp;
"We were in close contact in the last weeks. We knew he was in a good space mentally. That's what he proved. He was very positive throughout the camp."
Tuchel was also impressed by Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers in his first England start.
Rogers has become a key figure for Villa during their run to the Champions League quarter-finals this season and Tuchel saw signs that he can replicate that form on the international stage.
"I'm happy with him. He deserved to start. A match where we are so dominant could suit him more to play from the wings," said Tuchel, whose team return to action against Andorra in June.
"He felt more freedom when we played him there. There was more space. He did good."

Set a target of 307, Australia rode on Marsh's third ODI hundred and fifties from David Warner (53) and Steve Smith (63 not out) to complete the task with 32 balls in hand. The five-time champions will face South Africa in their semifinal in Kolkata on November 16.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, ended their campaign with yet another loss and would hope India beat the Netherlands on Sunday so that they can hold on to their 8th position and qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Marsh, who had gone home after losing his grandfather, smashed as many as 9 maximums and 17 fours during his excellent knock, adding 120 off 116 and 175 off 136 deliveries with Warner and Smith for the second and third wickets respectively to take it away from the Asian team.
Marsh's innings was also the second highest individual score of this World Cup after Glenn Maxwell's 201 not out.
Earlier, Towhid Hridoy slammed a 79-ball 74, studded with five fours and two sixes, as Bangladesh produced their best batting effort of the tournament to post a competitive 306 for 8.
In response, Australia lost Travis Head (10) early but Marsh and Warner shrugged off the jittery start to take them to 100 for 1 in 15 overs.
Marsh looked in solid form, making an attacking start as Warner seemed happy to play the second fiddle.
Marsh cracked three fours off Mahedi Hasan in the fourth over before depositing Taskin Ahmed over deep square leg. He then danced down the pitch to clobber another six off Nasum Ahmed and repeated the treatment to Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 12th over.
The result was Marsh raced to his fifty in 37 balls.
Warner used his pull shot to good use and ran well between the wickets to keep ticking along. He picked Nasum for special treatment, sending him across the fence twice in the seventh over.
In the 19th over, Warner cut the bowler for another four through the covers to bring up the 100-run stand with Marsh, before reaching his fifty with another boundary.
Mustafizur Rahman returned to remove Warner in the 23rd over though Shanto almost dropped the catch, which reminded of Herschelle Gibbs' moment from the 1999 edition.
Marsh continued unfazed, owning the off side, using his cover drives and off drives to score maximum runs there.
He notched up his ton in the 31st over and then went after Mehidy with another maximum over long-on. Then he turned his attention to Mustafizur, smoking him over the sightscreen in the 33rd over before adding another one in the 42nd over.
One over later, Taskin was sent over mid-wicket as Australia galloped towards the target.
In the end, Smith knocked off the winning runs with a boundary off Mustafizur.
Opting to bowl, Josh Hazlewood (0/21) was on the money with the new ball, while Adam Zampa (2/32) scalped two to take the top position in the list of most wicket takers in this World Cup, and Sean Abbott (2/61), playing his first game, also took two wickets.
Litton Das (36) and Tanzid Hasan (36) gave Bangladesh a good start on a belter of a wicket as they were 76 for no loss at one stage. However, both frittered away their starts.
Pat Cummins, who conceded 10 runs in his first over, was taken to the cleaners by Tanzid in the sixth over, with two fours.
Litton joined the party with three boundaries in the eighth over as Tanzid brought up the team fifty with another four off Marsh, in 49 balls.
Abbott broke the partnership with Tanzid top-edging a short ball to hand the bowler a caught and bowl chance.
Najmul Hossain Shanto (45) also looked in fine fettle, producing two hits to the fence off Marsh, as Bangladesh scored 100 for one in 15.1 overs.
However, Zampa had Litton caught by Marnus Labuschagne at long-on.
Hridoy smashed two sixes en route to a 63-run alliance with Shanto, but Labuschagne produced a terrific throw to run out the stand-in skipper.
Mahmudullah (32) clobbered three sixes and a four during his 44-run stand with Hridoy as the 200 was up for Bangladesh in the 32nd over.
Mushfiqur Rahim (21) became the second victim of Zampa but Mehidy Hasan Miraz provided some impetus, blasting four boundaries before Abbott sent him back.
Bangladesh could add just 67 runs in the last 10 overs, but the total was enough to ensure that their net run rate wouldn't go below Sri Lanka in the race for the Championships trophy qualification.

Referee Yoshimi Yamashita will return to Qatar to make more football history at the men's Asian Cup in January after she worked in the country last year at the men's World Cup.
Yamashita is among five female match officials, including two referees, picked Thursday by the Asian Football Confederation to work in Qatar. The tournament runs form Jan. 12 to Feb. 10.
It is the first time the AFC has appointed female match officials for its marquee men's event.
Katherine Jacewicz of Australia was also picked among the referees. The assistants selected are Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi of Japan, and Kim Kyoung Min of South Korea.
The 24-team Asian Cup will be played in most of the same stadiums as the men's World Cup, where Yamashita served as the fourth official for six group games.
Yamashita was one of three female referees picked by FIFA for the men's World Cup. Stephanie Frappert of France made history working the Germany-Costa Rica game in the group stage.
In April, Yamashita led the first all-female team of match officials for a game in the J-League, Japan's top league.
The AFC said the video review system will be used for the entire tournament for the first time. At the 2019 tournament, video review started being used at the quarterfinal stage.
