Swiss investigative organisation, Public eye and International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) tested Nestle&rsquo;s baby-food products sold in Asia, Africa and Latin America in a Belgian laboratory. Researchers found that sugar in the form of sucrose or honey was found in Nido and Cerelac.
While the report is being studied, let us look at some ways we can keep our babies away from sugar.&nbsp;
<h3>How to keep babies away from sugar?</h3>
Breastfeeding
If you can, ensure your baby has breast milk for the first six months. Breast milk has all the necessary nutrients without added sugars. This also helps in shaping a baby's taste preferences towards natural flavours.
Switch to healthy drinks
Replace sugary drinks with water or milk (breast milk or formula milk). Do not let them indulge in regular soda, flavoured milks, kool aid drinks, sweetened juices, sports drink, energy drinks and tea.
Beware of other names for sugar
Some packaged foods literally have "sweetened" in their name, such as sweetened apple sauces or sweetened peaches. Foods we do not expect to have sugar may also have added sugars, like yogurt. Added sugars go by many different names, such as high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrates, cane sugar, corn sweetener, lactose, glucose, sucrose and maple syrup.&nbsp;
Make sure to always check the ingredient list.&nbsp;
Be insistent
Does your child hate greens and often pukes it out? It is time to get insistent! Offer your child healthy foods like&nbsp;
Offer children bitter foods like vegetables over and over. Young children need to be exposed to foods 30 or so times before they learn to like them!
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting the consumption of added sugars for all age groups, including babies and young children. In 2019, WHO issued guidelines specifically targeting added sugar in baby food products.

In a recent announcement, the Indian government has revealed that it will make a decision regarding sugar exports for the upcoming 2023/24 season after obtaining accurate estimates of the total sugar cane production. The Department of Food and Public Distribution emphasized that their foremost priority is to ensure an ample supply of sugar for consumption, ethanol production, and the maintenance of closing stocks amounting to 6 million tonnes for the approaching season.
This move follows a report from Reuters which suggested that India is poised to halt the export of sugar from mills in the next season starting from October. This decision, if implemented, would mark the first time in seven years that sugar shipments have been suspended, attributed to diminished cane yields caused by inadequate rainfall.
In the current season, mills were permitted to export only 6.1 million tonnes of sugar until September 30, a significant reduction compared to the record 11.1 million tonnes allowed in the previous season. In a strategic attempt to stabilize domestic sugar availability and prices, the country had previously classified sugar as a restricted commodity until October 31, 2023.
This announcement has already impacted local sugar prices, causing them to surge to their highest level in nearly two years. In response, the government has sanctioned an additional sale of 200,000 tons of sugar by mills in August, aiming to curb the rising prices.
The challenging monsoon conditions in key cane-producing regions, namely Maharashtra in the west and Karnataka in the south, have played a pivotal role in this situation. Both these states contribute to over 50% of India's total sugar output, and this year's monsoon rains have been deficient by up to 50% according to weather department data.
Anticipating the impact of these weather conditions, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) had previously projected a potential 3.3% decline in sugar production for the 2023/24 season, estimating a total of 31.7 million tonnes. As the Indian government evaluates the forthcoming cane production estimates, it remains committed to making decisions that ensure a balanced and sustainable sugar market for the nation.

Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the trade association for the sugar sector, reduced its prior estimate of the nation's sugar production from 340 lakh tonnes to 328 lakh tonnes for the current marketing year ending in September.

State-owned SBI has filed an insolvency petition against the country's largest sugar firm Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Ltd.
SBI as a financial creditor has filed the plea before the Allahabad bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
In a regulatory filing, Bajaj Hindusthan Ltd informed that "we understand that State Bank of India, financial creditor through its advocate has initiated Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process of Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Ltd." The petition has been filed under Section 7 of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016.
In the last fiscal year, the company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 267.54 crore and a turnover of Rs 5,607 crore.
On August 12, the company reported that for the quarter ended June of this fiscal year, its net loss stood at Rs 45 crore and total income at Rs 1,538 crore.
"During the June '22 quarter, due to delayed payment of loan instalment and coupon rate interest on optionally convertible debentures the lenders have classified the company's account as Non-Performing Assets (NPA) as per the RBI regulations on loan classification.
The lenders of the company have signed an ICA (Inter Creditors Agreement) on January 28, 2022 for resolution of the company's accounts, the company had said in the notes of accounts of financial statement for the first quarter.
The debt restructuring as per RBI's S4A scheme has improved the company's liquidity position, it said.
"However, keeping in view the status of outstanding cane dues and funds for servicing debt obligations, the company is further discussing with the lenders a debt resolution plan to have a lasting solution to improve its liquidity," Bajaj Hindusthan had said.
The resolution plan envisages reduction of its overall debt, realignment of its capital structure, payment of cane dues of farmers, increasing cane availability and supply etc.
"The company is also exploring/evaluating various options for corporate restructuring to streamline the business and enhance the company's value," Bajaj Hindusthan said.
Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Ltd is India's leading sugar and ethanol manufacturing company.
Part of the Bajaj Group (Kushagra), it is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The company has fourteen sugar plants, all located in Uttar Pradesh.
These plants have an aggregate sugarcane crushing capacity of 1,36,000 tonnes crushed per day and alcohol distillation capacity of 800 kilolitres per day.
It is also one of the largest producers of ethanol and currently produces 38 million litres of ethanol per year. The company has increased its ethanol manufacturing capacity to roughly 218 million litres per year.
Bajaj Hindusthan said the company generates close to 430 MW of power from the bagasse produced at its sugar mills and supplies nearly 100 MW from it to the UP State Grid.
Additionally, it has five 90 MW coal-fired power plants adjacent to its sugar units which generate another 450 MW of electricity for the state grid.

Weeks after implementing curbs on wheat exports to ensure food security, the Indian govt now plans to restrict sugar exports to prevent a surge in domestic prices. 
According to reports, the new move to curb sugar export is being seen by some as a new risk to global food prices.
News agency Reuters has reported that it could potentially cap this season's exports at 10 million tonnes.
This would be the first such restriction in six years. India is the world's biggest sugar producer and the secondbiggest exporter behind Brazil.
The major importing countries are Indonesia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the UAE and African countries.
The average retail price of sugar in is about Rs 41.50 per kg in India and is likely to remain in the range of Rs 40-43 per kg in the coming months.

Sugar exports rose by 64 per cent to 71 lakh tonnes during the October 2021-April 2022 period on better demand for the Indian sweetener in global markets, according to a statement by the industry body Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) on May 19. It added that 43.19 lakh tonnes of sugar were exported during the corresponding period of the last year.

According to reports, the new move to curb sugar export is being seen by some as a new risk to global food prices.
News agency Reuters has reported that it could potentially cap this season's exports at 10 million tonnes.

This would be the first such restriction in six years.&nbsp;India is the world's biggest sugar producer and the second biggest exporter behind Brazil.
The major importing countries are Indonesia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the UAE and African countries.
The average retail price of sugar in is about Rs 41.50 per kg in India and is likely to remain in the range of Rs 40-43 per kg in the coming months.

A new study from the Boston University School of Medicine has found that drinking sugar-sweetened beverages can lead to an increase in liver fat. The study was published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition where&nbsp;fat&nbsp;builds up in the liver. This disease is common in people who are overweight or obese. Fatigue and pain are common symptoms but liver failure is also one of the possibilities.

For the study, researchers examined 1,636 participants with an average age of 50 years. Participants reported on the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages or soda they usually consumed.
As per the findings, people who consumed sugar-sweetened beverages more frequently, had a 2.53 times increased risk of NAFLD compared to non-consumers. As per the NHS, the early stages of this condition affect one in every three people in the UK.

India&rsquo;s food safety authority, FSSAI has decided to put food safety labels on the front side of packaged food.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to mandate labelling on the front of food packets detailing the amount of salt, sugar and fat content and their respective impact on health.
The food industry wants the label to be a guideline informing the consumer about the quantity of salt, sugar, sodium and fats in the packet without giving an out and out health warning. This comes with an aim to enable consumers to make an informed decision and not discourage consumption of packaged food.

The FSSAI will get a people's perception study conducted by the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, on what kind of label people would like. After completion&nbsp;of the study, the final list of guidelines will be rolled out.
The authority took nearly eight years to reach this point, however, countries like Brazil and Chile already have front-of-package food safety labels. The FSSAI is considering four types of labels; traffic light indicators, health star ratings, nutrition scores and warning symbols.
Interestingly, the processed food business in India is estimated to be worth $44 billion and is increasing at a rate of 24% per year.
