Indian equity markets closed lower on Wednesday after the RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent and shifted towards calibrated tightening. The rupee also fell to a five-month low.

Sensex falls 429 points, Nifty slips 173 points after RBI rate hike

Indian equity markets closed lower on Wednesday after the RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent and shifted towards calibrated tightening. The rupee also fell to a five-month low.

Indian equity markets ended lower on Wednesday, with the Sensex and Nifty declining after the Reserve Bank of India shifted its monetary policy stance towards calibrated tightening. Investors also remained cautious amid inflation concerns, while the rupee slipped to a five-month low.
The NIFTY 50 closed at 22,603.05, down 173.05 points or 0.76 per cent. The BSE Sensex ended at 72,638.70, declining 429.11 points or 0.59 per cent.
Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital, said the decline reflected some profit-taking following the sharp recovery seen over the previous two sessions.
“Indian equities are witnessing some profit-taking after the sharp rebound of the previous two sessions, with the Sensex and Nifty declining amid caution ahead of the RBI policy decision,” Kasat said.
The RBI's decision to raise the repo rate by 25 bps to 5.50 per cent and move towards calibrated tightening further added to concerns surrounding inflation, elevated crude oil prices and the external environment.
Selling was visible across several major sectors. Nifty Auto fell 1.44 per cent, Nifty FMCG declined 0.99 per cent, Nifty IT dropped 1.31 per cent, while Nifty Metal fell 2.31 per cent. Nifty Pharma declined 0.42 per cent, Nifty Realty slipped 1.85 per cent, Nifty Consumer Durables dropped 1.32 per cent and Nifty Oil & Gas declined 0.51 per cent.
Some sectoral indices, however, ended higher. Nifty Media gained 0.60 per cent, Nifty PSU Bank rose 0.92 per cent and Nifty Private Bank advanced 0.13 per cent.
Among Nifty 50 stocks, Kotak Bank, BSE, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, HDFC Life and Coal India were among the top gainers. Titan, Adani Enterprises, Hindalco, JSW Steel and BEL were among the top losers.
The rupee continued to weaken, falling 35 paise to Rs 96.77 per US dollar at the time of reporting, marking a five-month low.
Crude oil prices also remained a concern. Brent crude rose 1 per cent to USD 101.59 per barrel at the time of reporting.
In precious metals, gold declined 0.50 per cent to Rs 1,49,375 per 10 grams for 24 karats, while silver fell 1.07 per cent to Rs 2,24,800 per kg at the time of reporting.
Riyank Arora, Associate Vice President – HNI & Derivatives at Hedged.in, said the recent decline had brought the indices closer to important support levels.
“The recent weakness has brought the indices closer to their key support levels. While profit booking and selling pressure remain visible, the broader trend will remain intact as long as these supports hold. For now, a buy-on-dips approach in fundamentally strong and technically sound names remains preferable, with strict risk management and close monitoring of the key support zones”.
Asian markets also largely ended lower. Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 0.54 per cent to 70,303, while Singapore's Straits Times fell 1.63 per cent to 5,608.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.79 per cent to 24,090, while Taiwan's weighted index slipped 0.03 per cent to 49,806. South Korea's KOSPI fell more than 2 per cent to the 6,803 level.

Indian equity markets extended their recovery on Tuesday, with the Sensex gaining 685.34 points to 73,067.81 and the Nifty rising 220.35 points to 22,776.10. Chemicals, oil and gas, pharma and banking stocks led the gains.

Sensex gains 685 points, Nifty rises 220 points to cross 22,700

Indian equity markets extended their recovery on Tuesday, with the Sensex gaining 685.34 points to 73,067.81 and the Nifty rising 220.35 points to 22,776.10. Chemicals, oil and gas, pharma and banking stocks led the gains.

Indian equity markets closed higher on Tuesday, with the Sensex rising more than 680 points and the Nifty settling above the 22,700 mark as reduced selling pressure provided some relief to investors.
The Sensex ended at 73,067.81, gaining 685.34 points or 0.95 per cent from its previous close of 72,382.47. The Nifty also finished in positive territory at 22,776.10, up 220.35 points or 0.98 per cent compared with its previous close of 22,555.75.
All broad market indices ended higher. Among sectoral indices, most closed with gains, led by Nifty Chemicals, which surged 1.98 per cent. The oil & gas, pharma, private bank, FMCG and healthcare indices also ended higher.
On the BSE, Trent, Kotak Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance, Indi Go, Eternal, Asian Paint, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharma, LT and BEL were among the major gainers. Tech Mahindra, Titan, ITC, Infosys, TCS and M&M were among the stocks that ended as top drags.
On the NSE, Trent, BSE, Kotak Bank, Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance, Eternal, Asian Paint, SBI Life and Indi Go were among the key gainers. Coal India, Tech Mahindra, Max Health, TMPV, ITC, Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Titan and TCS were among the major losers.
Market analyst Vipin Dixena said the recovery was supported by buying in banks and financial stocks, while quarterly updates from Trent and Kotak Mahindra Bank added stock-specific momentum.
“Indian equity markets extended their recovery today. The buying was led by banks and financials, while strong quarterly updates from companies such as Trent and Kotak Mahindra Bank provided additional stock-specific momentum.”
"In my view, today's session is encouraging because the market has now managed to extend yesterday's rebound after a prolonged period of weakness," Dixena said, stressing, “However, I would still call this a relief recovery rather than a confirmed trend reversal.”
Dixena pointed out that Brent crude remaining near USD 100 a barrel, the rupee weakening to around Rs 96.4 against the dollar and continued selling by foreign investors could weigh on the sustainability of the market's recovery.
In the commodity market, Brent crude was trading at around USD 98.64 per barrel, while crude oil was trading at around USD 87.72 per barrel at the time of reporting.
Dixena identified the 22,550–22,500 range as an important immediate support zone for the Nifty, while 22,700–22,800 remains a key resistance area.
“From a technical perspective, 22,550–22,500 is now an important immediate support zone for Nifty, while 22,700–22,800 remains the key resistance area. A decisive breakout above 22,800 would strengthen the recovery and potentially open the way towards 23,000. On the downside, failure to hold 22,500 would indicate that the recent bounce is losing momentum. After the sharp September correction, I would therefore look for follow-through buying before becoming more constructive,” Dixena noted.
Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Limited, said the Nifty could face resistance in the 22,650–22,800 range, followed by the 23,000–23,200 zone. He said that while the recovery and oversold conditions were encouraging, the broader trend remained cautious.
“Going ahead, the 22,650–22,800 zone is likely to act as the immediate hurdle, followed by 23,000–23,200. Although the recent recovery is encouraging and the market remains oversold, the broader trend continues to remain cautious thus the current rebound should be approached selectively, with a preference for stock-specific opportunities rather than aggressive index-level exposure,” Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Limited, noted.

Indian equity markets ended higher on Monday, led by FMCG, energy and banking stocks. The Sensex gained 472.77 points to close at 72,382.47, while the Nifty rose 133.80 points to settle at 22,555.75.

Sensex gains 473 points, Nifty rises 134 points as markets stage recovery

Indian equity markets ended higher on Monday, led by FMCG, energy and banking stocks. The Sensex gained 472.77 points to close at 72,382.47, while the Nifty rose 133.80 points to settle at 22,555.75.

Indian equity markets ended higher on Monday, snapping their recent corrective trend as FMCG, energy and banking stocks led the recovery. Positive global cues, including easing Brent crude prices, also provided support.
The Sensex closed at 72,382.47, gaining 472.77 points or 0.66 per cent from its previous close of 71,909.70. The Nifty settled at 22,555.75, up 133.80 points or 0.60 per cent from the previous close of 22,421.95.
All broad market indices ended in positive territory. Among sectoral indices, FMCG was the top gainer, rising 1.67 per cent, followed by telecom, consumer durables and financial services. Nifty Healthcare was the biggest laggard.
On the BSE, ITC, Eternal, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank, Adani Ports, Reliance, Bharti Airtel, TCS, LT, Titan, NTPC, Maruti, Axis Bank and Power Grid were among the top gainers. HCL Tech, Asian Paint, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, Infosys, BEL and Tech Mahindra were among the major drags.
On the NSE, ITC, BSE, TMPV, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, NTPC, Eternal, Reliance, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, TCS, ONGC, Power Grid, Axis Bank, SBIN and Bajaj Finserve were among the top gainers. HCL Tech, Max Health, Cipla, Sun Pharma, Infosys, Apollo Hospital, Asian Paint, Kotak Bank, Tata Steel and JSW Steel were among the major laggards.
Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Limited noted, “Markets witnessed a strong recovery on Monday, taking a breather from the recent corrective trend and gaining over half a percent. After a gap-up opening, the benchmark indices remained in a range through the session and eventually held on to most of their gains. The Nifty reclaimed the 22,500 mark, while the Sensex settled around the 72,300 level.”
Mishra noted, FMCG, energy and banking led the recovery, supported by strength across select counters following positive quarterly business updates.
“Pharma and IT lagged after their recent phase of relative outperformance. The broader market also participated in the recovery, with both midcap and small-cap indices gaining nearly half a percent each,” he said.
As per Mishra, “Global cues turned relatively supportive as crude oil prices eased from recent highs, with Brent hovering around USD 102 a barrel, providing some relief on the inflation front. Softer-than-expected US jobs data also reduced expectations of aggressive monetary tightening by the US Federal Reserve, supporting risk appetite across emerging markets.”
In the commodity market, Brent crude was trading at around USD 102.59 per barrel while crude oil was trading at around USD 90.58 per barrel at the time of reporting.
However, “the US 10-year Treasury yield remains elevated, while the rupee continues to hover above the Rs 96 per dollar mark. Persistent foreign selling also remains a key overhang,” he noted.
From a technical perspective, Mishra noted the Nifty has shown signs of a relief recovery after testing the crucial long-term support zone around 22,400–22,600.
“Going ahead, the 22,650–22,800 zone is likely to act as the immediate hurdle, followed by 23,000–23,200. Although the recent recovery is encouraging and the market remains oversold, the broader trend continues to remain cautious thus the current rebound should be approached selectively, with a preference for stock-specific opportunities rather than aggressive index-level exposure.”
Vinit Bolinjkar, Head of Research, Ventura said, “After eight consecutive weeks of decline — the longest losing streak in 25 years — elevated US bond yields and persistent FII selling remain the dominant overhang.”
“Expect continued volatility, with the rupee, crude oil prices, and the RBI's rate stance as key swing factors,” he said, adding “Overall, a stock-specific, news-driven market is likely, with broader direction hinging on how global bond yields and RBI's tone evolve through the week.”
Market analyst Vipin Dixena noted, “In my view, today's rebound is important, but I would still treat it as a relief rally rather than a confirmed trend reversal. Lower crude prices and softer-than-expected US jobs data reduced concerns around aggressive US Fed tightening, while positive quarterly updates from banks provided an additional domestic trigger.”
“From a technical perspective, 22,400–22,350 becomes an important immediate support zone for Nifty, while 22,600–22,700 is the first major resistance area. A sustained move above 22,700 would strengthen the case for a deeper technical recovery towards 23,000. On the other hand, failure to hold 22,400 could bring the recent lows back into focus,” he said.

Indian markets ended lower on Wednesday as selling pressure returned in the afternoon. The Nifty fell 95.75 points, while the Sensex declined 48.78 points, with pharma, healthcare and metal stocks weighing on sentiment.

Sensex Falls 49 Points, Nifty Slips 96 As Selling Pressure Returns

Indian markets ended lower on Wednesday as selling pressure returned in the afternoon. The Nifty fell 95.75 points, while the Sensex declined 48.78 points, with pharma, healthcare and metal stocks weighing on sentiment.

Indian benchmark indices ended lower on Wednesday after a volatile session, extending the prevailing corrective trend as afternoon selling erased an initial recovery attempt. Weakness in pharma, healthcare and metal stocks, along with continued foreign investor outflows, kept sentiment subdued.
The Nifty settled at 22,620.45, down 95.75 points or 0.42 per cent from its previous close of 22,716.20. The Sensex ended at 72,480.29, declining 48.78 points or 0.07 per cent from its previous close of 72,529.07.
The indices opened largely flat before attempting a recovery. The Sensex rose more than 500 points, while the Nifty crossed the 22,800 level. The gains, however, failed to hold as selling returned in the afternoon, taking the Nifty towards 22,600.
Nifty Healthcare was the biggest sectoral drag, falling 2.57 per cent. Nifty Metal and Nifty Pharma also declined by more than 1 per cent each. Media, cement, chemicals, telecom and realty indices ended higher.
Realty, banking and auto stocks witnessed a notable rebound, while pharma and healthcare remained under pressure after their phase of steady outperformance. Metal and FMCG stocks also closed lower.
On the BSE, Kotak Bank, ICICI Bank, IndiGo, Axis Bank, Tech Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever, BEL, TCS, Maruti, HCL Tech and Reliance were among the major gainers. Eternal, Sun Pharma, Titan, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, NTPC, Bajaj Finserv, M&M and Power Grid were among the top drags.
On the NSE, Kotak Bank, ICICI Bank, IndiGo, Axis Bank, TMPV, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever, Maruti and HCL Tech were among the major gainers. Apollo Hospital, Max Health, Cipla, Sun Pharma, Nestle, HDFC Bank, JSW Steel, ONGC, Titan, Hindalco, Bajaj Finance and Asian Paints were among the top laggards.
Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research, Religare Broking Limited, said, “Markets traded volatile on Wednesday but eventually edged lower, extending the prevailing corrective trend. After a largely flat opening, the benchmark indices initially attempted a recovery, with the Sensex gaining over 500 points and the Nifty moving above 22,800. However, the recovery failed to sustain, and selling resumed in the afternoon, pushing the Nifty down to 22,620.45.”
“On the sectoral front, realty, banking and auto led the recovery and witnessed a notable rebound. However, pharma and healthcare remained under significant pressure after their phase of steady outperformance, while metal and FMCG also ended lower,” Mishra said.
He added that global macro concerns continued to keep sentiment fragile, with Brent crude remaining elevated and the US 10-year Treasury yield staying near recent highs.
“Persistent foreign selling remained another major overhang, with FIIs selling nearly Rs 9,980 crore on Tuesday, while the rupee remained close to the ₹96 per dollar mark,” Mishra said.
Mishra said the Nifty failed to sustain its recovery above the 22,750–22,800 zone and slipped back towards 22,600, keeping the broader structure under pressure.
“The 22,600 zone remains an important immediate support, followed by the 22,400 region, while 22,750–22,800 is likely to act as the immediate hurdle and 23,000 as the major resistance,” he said.
“With the index continuing to trade near six-month lows and broader market participation remaining weak, the near-term setup remains cautious, warranting a selective approach and close monitoring of the key support levels,” Mishra added.
In the commodity market, Brent crude was trading at around USD 97.35 per barrel, while crude oil was trading at around USD 90.05 per barrel at the time of reporting. Gold was trading at around USD 4,187.63.
Meanwhile, shares of BSE fell more than 3 per cent following its inclusion in the Nifty 50 index on Wednesday.
Mishra said, “BSE has remained under correction for nearly one-and-a-half years, with no clear signs of a sustained reversal yet. Persistent pressure across stocks and sectors continues to weigh on the broader sentiment.”
Market analyst Vipin Dixena said the Nifty 50 struggled around the 22,700 mark after its initial recovery attempt.
“In my view, today's session is important because the market is trying to stabilise after the sharp September correction, but investors are still not getting a clear positive trigger,” he said.
Dixena said 22,650 was emerging as an important near-term support zone for the Nifty, while 22,800–22,850 remained an immediate resistance zone, followed by 23,000.

Indian equity markets ended lower on Tuesday, with the Sensex declining 242.65 points and the Nifty 50 falling 64.05 points.

Sensex falls 243 points, Nifty slips 64 points as foreign outflows and crude prices weigh

Indian equity markets ended lower on Tuesday, with the Sensex declining 242.65 points and the Nifty 50 falling 64.05 points.

Indian equity markets ended lower on Tuesday, with persistent foreign investor outflows, elevated crude oil prices and high US Treasury yields keeping investors cautious. The pace of IPO fundraising also added pressure by absorbing liquidity from the market.
The Nifty 50 closed at 22,716.20, down 64.05 points or 0.28 per cent. The BSE Sensex settled at 72,529.07, declining 242.65 points or 0.33 per cent.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, said domestic equities continued to face correction-led pressure due to volatile crude prices, elevated US Treasury yields and continued foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows.
“Domestic equities continue to face correction-led headwinds amid volatile crude prices, U.S. Treasury yields hovering near two-decade highs, and persistent FII outflows exerting pressure on the rupee,” Nair said.
He added that the unprecedented pace of IPO fundraising was absorbing incremental liquidity, while investor risk appetite remained subdued amid a hawkish global backdrop and increasing expectations of further rate hikes later in the year.
IT and consumer durables lead sectoral losses
Among sectoral indices on the NSE, Nifty IT declined 1.56 per cent, while Nifty Consumer Durables fell 2.14 per cent.
Nifty Realty dropped 1.25 per cent, Nifty Auto declined 0.83 per cent and Nifty FMCG lost 0.88 per cent.
Nifty Private Bank fell 0.13 per cent, while Nifty Oil and Gas declined 0.49 per cent. Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Pharma, Nifty Metal and Nifty Media ended higher.
Crude remains elevated despite marginal decline
Brent crude oil prices fell 0.47 per cent to USD 105 per barrel at the time of reporting. Despite the decline, crude prices remained elevated compared with their longer-term levels, keeping inflation and corporate cost concerns in focus.
Riyank Arora, Associate Vice President – HNI & Derivatives at Hedged.in, said the market's decline appeared to be routine profit booking, provided key support levels held.
“Today's dip looks like routine profit booking rather than a change in trend, provided the key supports hold. The larger picture still favours the bulls. A buy-on-dips approach in quality names, backed by disciplined risk management, remains the sensible way to play this”.
Asian markets end lower
Other Asian markets also closed lower on Tuesday.
Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 1.43 per cent to 64,950, while Singapore's Straits Times declined 0.25 per cent to 5,714.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.73 per cent to 24,465, Taiwan's weighted index declined 0.82 per cent to 47,631, and South Korea's KOSPI lost 0.28 per cent to 6,870.

Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp sell-off on Monday, with the Sensex plunging 1,124 points and the Nifty declining 1.56% as rising crude oil prices, elevated US bond yields and a weakening rupee fuelled inflation concerns.

Sensex crashes 1,124 points, Nifty falls 1.56% as crude surges above $107

Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp sell-off on Monday, with the Sensex plunging 1,124 points and the Nifty declining 1.56% as rising crude oil prices, elevated US bond yields and a weakening rupee fuelled inflation concerns.

Indian equity markets witnessed a sharp sell-off on Monday, with the Sensex plunging over 1,100 points and the Nifty 50 declining more than 1.5 per cent as rising crude oil prices, elevated US bond yields and a weakening rupee intensified concerns over inflation and foreign fund outflows.
The BSE Sensex settled at 72,771.72, shedding 1,124.02 points or 1.52 per cent. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,780.25, down 360.25 points or 1.56 per cent.
The decline extended across sectors, with nearly all sectoral indices on the NSE ending in negative territory. Banking, realty, metals and oil and gas stocks faced considerable selling pressure, reflecting concerns over rising input costs and the broader global economic outlook.
The Nifty PSU Bank index led the losses among major sectoral indices, tumbling more than 3.20 per cent. Nifty Realty dropped 2.32 per cent, while Nifty Oil and Gas declined 1.97 per cent and Nifty Metal fell 1.90 per cent.
Nifty Auto slipped 1.74 per cent, Nifty FMCG declined 1.38 per cent, while Nifty IT registered a relatively modest fall of 0.09 per cent.
Crude oil, US bond yields weigh on investor sentiment
Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital, attributed the market downturn to mounting international macroeconomic pressures rather than domestic factors alone.
“With Brent crude moving above USD 106, US 10-year yields near 5.2 per cent and the rupee weakening towards Rs 96 per dollar, concerns around inflation, import costs and emerging-market flows have intensified,” Kasat said.
Brent crude prices climbed more than 3 per cent on Monday, reaching USD 107.88 per barrel at the time of reporting. The increase heightened concerns for India, which relies heavily on imported crude oil to meet its energy requirements.
Kasat cautioned that continued increases in crude prices and additional foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows could prolong volatility in domestic equities.
However, he noted that any easing of tensions between the US and Iran, a correction in oil prices or a decline in bond yields could help markets stabilise.
He advised investors to remain selective, prioritising companies with earnings visibility and strong balance sheets amid the uncertain environment.
Dr Reddy's, Infosys buck market trend; Jio Financial among top losers
Selling pressure was also evident in individual stocks, with just two Nifty 50 constituents, Dr Reddy's and Infosys, managing to close in positive territory.
Jio Finance, Adani Enterprises, TMPV, Tata Consumer and Bajaj Auto featured among the biggest losers in the benchmark index.
The weakness extended to precious metals, with gold and silver prices registering sharp declines.
Gold fell more than 2.5 per cent to Rs 1,47,100 per 10 grams for 24-carat gold at the time of reporting. Silver prices declined 3.25 per cent to Rs 2,26,988 per kg.
Middle East tensions keep crude oil markets on edge
N S Ramaswamy, Head of Commodity & CRM at Ventura, said Brent crude November futures had moved back above the $106-per-barrel mark as concerns persisted over prolonged disruptions to oil supplies from the Middle East.
He said, “Market sentiment has been supported by uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the key shipping route, while Iran continues to await a clear U.S. response. Meanwhile, tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis remain elevated, with Saudi Arabia intercepting drones amid renewed security concerns”.
Ramaswamy identified the $108-$109 per barrel range as the immediate resistance zone for crude oil. A sustained move above this level could push prices towards $112 and $115 per barrel.
On the downside, immediate support levels were placed at $104, $101 and $97 per barrel.
The developments around the Strait of Hormuz and continued regional tensions have kept attention focused on the potential impact on global energy supplies and oil-importing economies.
Asian markets deliver mixed performance
Equity markets across Asia ended Monday's session on a mixed note, with losses in Japan and South Korea contrasting with gains in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 0.20 per cent to close at 66,230, while South Korea's KOSPI recorded a sharper fall of 2.77 per cent, ending at 6,889.
In contrast, Singapore's Straits Times index gained 0.31 per cent to settle at 5,729. Hong Kong's Hang Seng also advanced, rising 0.47 per cent to close at 24,626.

Sensex and Nifty closed higher on value buying, while elevated crude prices, bond yields and foreign investor outflows kept sentiment cautious.

Sensex Rises 315 Points, Nifty Gains 77 as Markets Recover After Sharp Sell-Off

Sensex and Nifty closed higher on value buying, while elevated crude prices, bond yields and foreign investor outflows kept sentiment cautious.

Domestic equity markets closed higher on Friday, with benchmark indices recovering from the previous session's sharp sell-off as selective value buying supported sentiment.
The Nifty 50 closed at 23,140.50, gaining 77.40 points or 0.34 per cent, while the BSE Sensex settled at 73,895.74, up 315.20 points or 0.43 per cent.
However, market participants remained cautious as crude prices continued to stay elevated, US Treasury yields remained above 5 per cent, and foreign investors continued to sell Indian equities.
Crude Prices, Selective Buying Support Recovery
Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital, said the market's recovery was measured following Thursday's sharp decline.
"Indian equities attempted a measured recovery today after Thursday's sharp sell-off. The rebound has been driven more by easing crude prices and selective value buying than by a broad improvement in risk appetite," Kasat said.
Brent crude oil prices declined 1.38 per cent to USD 105 per barrel at the time of reporting, although they remained elevated from the average price.
Kasat said the divergence between large-cap stocks and weaker mid- and small-cap stocks also indicated that investors continued to remain selective.
He added that the sustainability of the market recovery would depend on crude prices stabilising, global yields cooling and selling pressure from foreign investors moderating.
"Until then, volatility is likely to remain elevated," he said.
Auto, FMCG Stocks Lead Sectoral Gains
On the sectoral front, most NSE indices ended higher, with Nifty Auto gaining 0.84 per cent and Nifty FMCG rising 0.26 per cent.
Nifty Metal also advanced 0.28 per cent, while Nifty PSU Bank increased 0.13 per cent and Nifty Private Bank gained 0.26 per cent.
Among the indices that ended lower, Nifty IT declined 0.28 per cent, Nifty Media fell 0.23 per cent, Nifty Pharma slipped 0.21 per cent, and Nifty Oil & Gas declined 0.23 per cent.
Gold, Silver Prices Rise
In the commodities market, gold prices rose 0.42 per cent to Rs 1,51,336 per 10 grams for 24-karat gold.
Silver prices gained 1.09 per cent to Rs 2,36,022 per kg at the time of reporting.
Asian Markets End Mixed
Asian markets ended mixed on Friday. Japan's Nikkei 225 index gained 1.22 per cent to close at 66,320, while Singapore's Straits Times index rose 0.49 per cent to settle at 5,711.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index declined 1.21 per cent to close at 24,465. Markets in Taiwan and South Korea remained closed for a holiday.
Inflation, Foreign Fund Outflows Keep Sentiment Cautious
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, said volatile crude prices and elevated bond yields kept the market recovery capped.
“Concerns over inflation, foreign fund outflows and pressure on EM currencies remained intact. Selective bargain hunting after the recent pullback helped the market retain a positive bias, though gains remained confined to a narrow trading range".
Going ahead, the market's direction is expected to remain sensitive to movements in crude oil, global bond yields and foreign investor flows, with volatility likely to remain elevated until these macro pressures ease.

Sensex plunged 1,248 points and Nifty fell 1.64% as rising crude oil prices, US bond yields and geopolitical uncertainty triggered a sharp sell-off in Indian markets.

Sensex Crashes 1,248 Points, Nifty Falls 1.64% Amid Global Cues

Sensex plunged 1,248 points and Nifty fell 1.64% as rising crude oil prices, US bond yields and geopolitical uncertainty triggered a sharp sell-off in Indian markets.

Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on Thursday, with the Sensex tumbling over 1,247 points and the Nifty slipping below 23,100, as rising US bond yields, higher crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty triggered widespread selling.
The BSE Sensex settled at 73,580.54, declining 1,247.71 points or 1.67 per cent. The Nifty 50 closed at 23,063.10, down 383.70 points or 1.64 per cent.
Investor sentiment remained under pressure as Brent crude prices climbed back to around USD 106 per barrel, recovering from approximately USD 98 per barrel on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the US 10-year Treasury yield rose to around 5.11 per cent, fuelling concerns over inflation, borrowing costs and the pace of global monetary easing.
Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital, said markets witnessed a sharp risk-off session, with selling intensifying across sectors, particularly financial stocks.
“Indian equities witnessed a sharp risk-off session as selling intensified across sectors, particularly financials. The correction reflects more than routine profit-booking: the rise in the US 10-year Treasury yield to around 5.11 per cent, crude oil remaining above $100 a barrel and persistent geopolitical uncertainty are collectively raising concerns around inflation, borrowing costs and the pace of global monetary easing,” Kasat said.
He added that the combination of these factors was prompting investors to reduce exposure to risk, particularly in interest-rate-sensitive segments.
“Going forward, volatility could remain elevated until there is greater clarity on crude prices and global yields. A moderation in these pressures would be important for sentiment to stabilise,” he added.
Sectoral indices end largely in the red
Selling pressure extended across nearly all sectoral indices on the NSE, with auto, metal and private banking stocks among the major laggards.
The Nifty Metal index recorded the steepest decline among the listed sectors, falling 1.99 per cent, while the Nifty Auto index dropped 1.46 per cent.
The Nifty FMCG index declined 1.18 per cent, while the Nifty IT and Nifty Media indices fell 0.67 per cent and 0.75 per cent, respectively.
The Nifty Pharma index slipped 0.46 per cent, while the Nifty PSU Bank index declined 1.21 per cent. The Nifty Private Bank index fell by more than 2 per cent.
Asian markets mostly decline
Weakness in Indian equities was reflected across several Asian markets, with most major indices ending Thursday's session lower.
Japan's Nikkei 225 bucked the trend, gaining 0.89 per cent to close at 65,600, emerging as the only major index among those tracked to finish in positive territory.
Singapore's Straits Times index declined 0.46 per cent to 5,683, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.25 per cent to 24,772.
Taiwan's Weighted Index ended at 48,024, down 0.28 per cent. South Korean markets remained closed for a holiday.
Gold and silver prices decline
Precious metals also witnessed a decline, with both gold and silver prices ending lower.
Gold prices fell 0.61 per cent to Rs 1,50,378 per 10 grams for 24-karat gold, while silver prices declined 1.23 per cent to Rs 2,33,067 per kilogram.

Indian equity markets closed higher on Wednesday, with the Nifty 50 gaining 117.80 points and the Sensex rising 299.17 points. Stronger domestic growth signals, softer crude prices and gains in metals and banking stocks supported sentiment.

Sensex, Nifty End Higher As Domestic Growth Signals, Softer Crude Support Sentiment

Indian equity markets closed higher on Wednesday, with the Nifty 50 gaining 117.80 points and the Sensex rising 299.17 points. Stronger domestic growth signals, softer crude prices and gains in metals and banking stocks supported sentiment.

Indian equity markets closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark indices gaining ground amid signs of stronger domestic growth momentum and softer crude oil prices.
The Nifty 50 rose 117.80 points, or 0.50 per cent, to settle at 23,446.80, while the BSE Sensex gained 299.17 points, or 0.40 per cent, to close at 74,828.25.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, said the market remained positive despite intraday volatility as investors focused on improving domestic economic activity.
"Indian equities ended higher despite intraday volatility, as markets shrugged off an intraday surge in crude and focused on signs of strengthening domestic growth momentum," Nair said.
He said geopolitical developments at the UN General Assembly continued to keep a risk premium in oil prices, putting pressure on the rupee amid a stronger US dollar. However, a stronger-than-expected September flash PMI boosted confidence in the resilience of economic activity.
Nair said growth remained intact without a corresponding increase in inflationary pressures.
"This constructive macro backdrop supported buying interest across the market, helping domestic equities track gains in Asian peers," he said.
Metals, Banking Stocks Lead Gains
Most sectoral indices on the NSE ended in positive territory, with metal and banking stocks leading the advance.
The Nifty Metal index gained more than 2 per cent, while Nifty FMCG rose 1.27 per cent. Nifty Pharma advanced 0.72 per cent, Nifty PSU Bank gained 0.97 per cent and Nifty Auto rose 0.25 per cent.
Nifty IT was the biggest sectoral laggard, declining more than 1 per cent, while Nifty Media fell 0.63 per cent.
Nair said healthy participation across the broader market reflected improving investor confidence, although subdued IT stocks limited the benchmark's gains at higher levels.
Brent crude prices were trading below USD 100 per barrel, providing some relief to equities despite continued geopolitical concerns.
Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital, said the domestic market was witnessing a measured recovery following the previous session's correction.
"The early gains reflect improving global sentiment, softer crude prices and easing concerns around US-Iran tensions, although sustained FII selling remains a key overhang," Kasat said.
He advised investors to focus on corporate earnings, global bond yields and crude oil movements, while maintaining a staggered approach and avoiding aggressive positioning amid elevated volatility.
Gold, Silver Prices Decline
In commodities, gold prices fell 0.54 per cent to Rs 1,52,889 per 10 grams for 24-karat gold.
Silver prices also declined by more than 1 per cent to Rs 2,37,341 per kg at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, Singapore's Straits Times declined 0.24 per cent to close at 5,709, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.13 per cent to 24,807.

Stock market benchmark indices extended their previous day's rally in early trade on Thursday, with the Nifty hitting its fresh record high amid favourable global trends on growing hopes of a US Fed rate cut and foreign fund inflows.
The 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 313.38 points to 85,922.89 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty rallied 90.25 points to hit an all-time high of 26,295.55. The broader index had earlier scaled its record intra-day high of 26,277 on September 27, 2024.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, dipped 0.48 per cent to USD 62.83 per barrel.
"Global equity markets have extended their gains, buoyed by growing expectations of interest-rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve. Major US indices — including the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq — posted another session of solid advances as softer Treasury yields and renewed policy optimism strengthened risk appetite. This upbeat sentiment has carried into today’s global trade, with Asian markets opening higher," Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, said.

The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 55 points to 83,923.48 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty dipped 40.95 points to 25,722.40.

"FIIs renewed selling is constraining the rally in the market. During the last four days FIIs have sold equity worth Rs 14,269 crore. This is an indication that they will continue to sell on rallies. Higher valuations in India and muted earnings growth are restraining FIIs who are more focused on cheaper markets with better earnings growth," V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, said.
