Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed flat after a volatile session as investors reacted to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman&rsquo;s Union Budget 2025, with mixed views on tax relief and sectoral performance.&nbsp;

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended flat in a special trading session on Saturday as investors saw little coming in from the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for retail investors and the overall markets in the Union Budget.
But, buying in consumption-related sectors after Sitharaman exempted annual income of up to Rs 12 lakh from income tax and rejigged tax slabs as part of her reformist Budget prevented any major fall in the markets.
The markets were open on Saturday due to the presentation of the Union Budget.
In a day market with heavy volatility, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex eked out a marginal gain of 5.39 points or 0.01 per cent to settle at 77,505.96. During the day, it hit a high of 77,899.05 and a low of 77,006.47, gyrating 892.58 points.
The NSE Nifty dipped 26.25 points or 0.11 per cent to settle at 23,482.15. Intra-day, the benchmark scaled a high of 23,632.45 and a low of 23,318.30.
Markets were rallying for the past four days.
"The market has responded to the Union budget with a mixed view, primarily due to the modest 10 per cent YoY increase in capex for FY26, falling short of expectations. Sectors like railways, defense, and infra are affected on which the market relies for the performance, dampening the sentiment," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
On the other hand, Nair said, consumption-based sectors, which are expected to benefit the most, had a low effect on the broad market due to their modest market mix position.
"While the Budget failed to cheer the markets, sectoral stocks from consumer durables, FMCG, and automobile space attracted significant buying interest after the government announced major income tax relief for the salaried class.
With salaried income up to Rs 12 lakh per annum exempted from any tax, consumption is expected to get a major boost which is reflected positively across most of the consumption-related sectors," Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said.
In a relief to the middle class, Sitharaman exempted annual income of up to Rs 12 lakh from income tax and rejigged tax slabs as part of her reformist Budget.
Presenting her eighth straight Budget in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman laid out a blueprint for next generation reforms including raising FDI limit in insurance sector, simplification of tax laws, cutting duties on intermediaries while providing enhanced fiscal support for welfare measures.
This she did while sticking to the fiscal consolidation roadmap that projected the fiscal deficit to come down to 4.4 per cent of the GDP in the financial year 2025-26.
For the current financial year fiscal deficit has been pegged at 4.8 per cent of GDP.
"The Union Budget largely played to our expectations, particularly with the much-needed income tax relief for the middle class, which will drive consumption and economic growth. No changes were made to Securities Transaction Tax or capital gains tax, as anticipated," Pranav Haridasan, MD and CEO, Axis Securities, said.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Zomato surged over 7 per cent. Maruti, ITC Hotels, ITC, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Asian Paints, Titan and IndusInd Bank were among the biggest gainers.
Power Grid, Larsen &amp; Toubro, NTPC, UltraTech Cement, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Adani Ports were among the laggards.
"While the markets might have anticipated a more relaxed fiscal approach, the current stance is satisfactory. Overall, the budget is well-received, incorporating numerous reforms aimed at increasing farm incomes and supporting farmers. There are also considerable measures in place to assist MSMEs and to boost exports, making this a well-rounded budget that addresses the diverse needs of the populace," Vikas Khemani, Founder, Carnelian Asset Management &amp; Advisors, said.
Asian markets are closed on Saturday due to holidays. European markets were also closed.
US markets ended lower on Friday.
According to Vishal Kampani - Vice Chairman and Managing Director, JM Financial Ltd, the budget has touched upon all key elements to accelerate economic growth. It has successfully managed to strike a balance among the trinity &ndash; offering fiscal stimulus to consumption, maintaining the fiscal glide path and undertaking reforms to boost growth.
"All in all, it is a growth-focused budget which will boost all the growth levers &ndash; manufacturing, access to credit, exports, employment generation, innovation and technology development, sustainability, etc. which will have a multiplier impact on the economy," Kampani said.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 1,188.99 crore on Friday, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.29 per cent to USD 76.67 a barrel.
Rallying for the fourth day running on Friday, the 30-share BSE benchmark ended 740.76 points or 0.97 per cent higher at 77,500.57. The Nifty rallied 258.90 points or 1.11 per cent to 23,508.40.

Benchmark Sensex jumped 741 points while Nifty rallied to close above 23,500 on Friday on heavy buying in Larsen &amp; Toubro post its Q3 results and the Economic Survey predicting a pro-growth budget.
Rallying for the fourth day running, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 740.76 points or 0.97 per cent higher at 77,500.57. During the day, it jumped 846.15 points or 1.10 per cent to 77,605.96.
The NSE Nifty rallied 258.90 points or 1.11 per cent to 23,508.40. During the day, it climbed 297.3 points or 1.27 per cent to 23,546.80.
India is expected to record GDP growth of 6.3-6.8 per cent in 2025-26 on the back of strong fundamentals, calibrated fiscal consolidation and stable private consumption, said the Economic Survey tabled in Parliament on Friday.
"The indices are fueled with expectations of a pro-growth budget and prudent fiscal as indicated in the economic survey. Positive global cues and better-than-expected results from major companies also contributed to the upward trend.
"Market expects reductions in individual tax and job generation to boost consumption. By cutting fiscal deficit but continuing to boost infrastructure spending, the government may set the tone for a potential recovery in the consolidating market," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Larsen &amp; Toubro climbed 4.31 per cent after the infrastructure and engineering major reported 14 per cent rise in consolidated profit after tax to Rs 3,359 crore for the December quarter on the back of higher revenue from operations.
Nestle surged 4.25 per cent after the FMCG major reported 4.94 per cent increase in net profit at Rs 688.01 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2024.
IndusInd Bank, Titan, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, ITC and Maruti were the other major gainers.
ITC Hotels, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance and ICICI Bank were among the laggards.
In the month of January, the BSE benchmark declined 638.44 points or 0.81 per cent, while the Nifty lost 136.4 points or 0.57 per cent.
The BSE smallcap gauge jumped 1.83 per cent and midcap index surged 1.76 per cent.
All BSE sectoral indices ended higher. Capital Goods surged the most by 3.89 per cent, followed by industrials (3.61 per cent), power (2.56 per cent), realty (2.24 per cent), utilities (2.05 per cent), energy (1.92 per cent) and FMCG (1.90 per cent).
As many as 2,719 stocks advanced while 1,203 declined and 125 remained unchanged on the BSE.
"As the Union Budget approaches, the critical expectation is to revive market sentiment. Recent budgets have seen increased taxation on the capital market&mdash;higher STT, capital gains taxes, taxation of dividend income in shareholders&rsquo; hands, and the removal of tax benefits on buybacks.
"This year, it&rsquo;s imperative for the Finance Minister to avoid introducing new taxes on investors. Instead, providing meaningful tax rebates to enhance consumer spending power could help revive the consumption cycle," Sunil Damania, Chief Investment Officer, Mojopms, said.
The Economic Survey noted that on a longer-term basis, Indian markets have been among the best-performing markets in the world.
BSE market capitalisation to GDP ratio stood at 136 per cent at the end of December 2024, rising significantly over the last 10 years, it added.
"...the fundamentals of the domestic economy remain robust, with a strong external account, calibrated fiscal consolidation and stable private consumption. On balance of these considerations, we expect that the growth in FY26 would be between 6.3 and 6.8 per cent," the survey said.
In Asian markets, Tokyo settled in positive territory, while Seoul ended lower. Markets in Shanghai and Hong Kong were closed due to holidays.
European markets were trading higher. US markets ended in the positive zone on Thursday.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 4,582.95 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.26 per cent to USD 76.64 a barrel.
The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex advanced 226.85 points or 0.30 per cent to settle at 76,759.81 on Thursday. The Nifty went up by 86.40 points or 0.37 per cent to 23,249.50.

The 30-share Sensex advanced 226.85 points or 0.30 per cent to settle at 76,759.81 in a volatile trade. During the day, it surged 429.92 points or 0.56 per cent to 76,962.88.
The NSE Nifty went up by 86.40 points or 0.37 per cent to 23,249.50.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Bharti Airtel, Power Grid, Bajaj Finance, Nestle, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank, Hindustan Unilever and HDFC Bank were the biggest gainers.
Bajaj Finance climbed nearly 2 per cent after the company reported an 18 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit to Rs 4,308 crore for the December quarter.
Tata Motors tanked over 7 per cent after the firm reported a 22 per cent fall in consolidated net profit to Rs 5,578 crore for the third quarter ended December 2024, impacted by a decline in revenue from its passenger and commercial vehicles divisions.
ITC Hotels, Bajaj Finserv, Adani Ports, Tech Mahindra, Zomato and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the other laggards.
"The Indian markets concluded on a positive note despite fluctuating between gains and losses. The fall in oil prices due to a rise in US inventories and an ease in US 10-year yield after the US Fed's hawkish view may decelerate FIIs outflow.
"The upcoming budget may be seen as an inflection point, which is likely to reverse the current bearish trend if the policies restore growth and consumption," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
In Asian markets, Tokyo settled in positive territory. Markets in Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong were closed due to holidays. European markets were trading in the green. The US markets ended lower on Wednesday.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,586.43 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.43 per cent to USD 76.25 a barrel.
"Indian markets are currently experiencing heightened volatility due to sluggish economic growth and uncertainty surrounding Trump&rsquo;s policies and tariffs. With the monthly expiry of major indices today and the Union Budget scheduled for February 1st, investor sentiment is closely tied to upcoming economic measures.
"The interplay between global factors and domestic policies is adding to the complexity, making this a crucial period for market participants," Vikas Gupta, CEO and Chief Investment Strategist, OmniScience Capital, said.

The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex jumped 631.55 points or 0.83 per cent to settle at 76,532.96. During the day, it jumped 698.32 points or 0.92 per cent to 76,599.73.
The NSE Nifty soared 205.85 points or 0.90 per cent to 23,163.10.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Zomato jumped nearly 7 per cent. Tata Motors, Infosys, UltraTech Cement, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and Bajaj Finance were the other major gainers.
In contrast, ITC Hotels, Bharti Airtel, Maruti, Asian Paints and ITC were among the laggards.

The Indian stock markets saw some ups and downs on Tuesday but managed to finish in the green, offering a break after the steep decline on Monday.&nbsp;
By the end of the trading session, the Sensex had gained 535.24 points, or 0.71%, closing at 75,901.41. Similarly, the Nifty was up by 128.1 points, or 0.56%, ending at 22,957.25.&nbsp;
Out of the 4,629 companies traded, 1,116 saw an increase, while 2,429 declined, and 84 remained unchanged. Despite weak global signals, the markets showed resilience, mostly rising throughout the session, though a sharp drop in the last half hour wiped out much of the gains.
On the sectoral side, rate-sensitive industries like realty, banking, and auto performed well, thanks to the RBI's announcement of measures aimed at boosting liquidity.&nbsp;
However, the pharma and energy sectors faced some selling pressure. Broader markets continued to underperform, with mid-cap stocks losing nearly 0.5% and small-cap stocks falling by around 2%.
Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President of Research at Religare Broking, mentioned, "Markets have repeatedly struggled to sustain recovery attempts, and this session was no exception. Ongoing caution ahead of the Union Budget, a mixed earnings season, and weak global cues are further unsettling participants."
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, observed that the Indian market seemed oversold and was due for a rebound. "The RBI's move to infuse liquidity of Rs 1.5 trillion into the banking system is positive for the market. It increases the likelihood of a rate cut by the MPC in February. Banks are likely to benefit," he noted. He further added that the market was now trading at fair valuations, in line with long-term averages, following recent corrections.
Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities, remarked, "Technically, after a strong start, the market saw a sharp bounce but then witnessed profit booking at higher levels. A long-legged Doji candlestick formation on daily charts suggests indecisiveness between the bulls and bears."
The optimism today was largely driven by the banking sector's performance after the RBI's intervention to ease liquidity concerns. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, stated, "Large-cap stocks outperformed as their valuations are now considered fair, and expectations are high that the market correction is nearing its end. However, mid- and small-cap stocks continued to slide due to overvaluation. Volatility is likely to remain high in the short term due to the upcoming Union Budget, the FOMC meeting, and the F&amp;O expiry."

The 30-share BSE benchmark dropped 329.92 points or 0.43% to settle at 76,190.46. During the day, it slumped 428.63 points or 0.56% to 76,091.75.
The NSE Nifty declined 113.15 points or 0.49% to 23,092.20.

Markets in Europe were trading in the green. U.S. markets ended higher on Thursday.
U.S. President Donald Trump, on Thursday, addressed the World Economic Forum, where he offered business leaders low taxes if they manufacture their products in the U.S. while threatening them with tariffs if they don&rsquo;t.
Addressing the forum&rsquo;s Annual Meeting here through video conferencing, Trump also said he is going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down oil prices and asserted that if prices come down, the Russia-Ukraine war will end immediately.
Throughout the world, food prices went through the roof, the president said, and he took immediate action to control inflation in America.
"I promise to eliminate 10 old regulations for every new regulation... I am going to pass the largest tax cuts in American history to help our people," he noted.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹5,462.52 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data.

"A strong positive sentiment from Asian markets bolstered domestic markets, starting the week on a healthy note. Further, a robust initial set of earnings from the banking and financial sectors triggered a broad-based rally, driven by the likelihood of improved earnings in the near future.
"However, uncertainties surrounding Trump's policies continue to linger, with investors eagerly waiting for more clarity," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
The BSE smallcap gauge jumped 0.82 per cent and midcap index climbed 0.66 per cent.
Among BSE sectoral indices, telecommunication surged the most by 2.18 per cent, followed by bankex (2.03 per cent), power (1.39 per cent), financial services (1.24 per cent), utilities (1.17 per cent) and capital goods (0.96 per cent).
BSE consumer discretionary, auto and FMCG were the laggards.
As many as 2,503 stocks advanced while 1,557 declined and 168 remained unchanged on the BSE.
Global markets also advanced of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Trump announced that he had a &lsquo;very good&rsquo; telephone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping and that the outcome was positive. Analysts said that it indicates that initially Trump would go slow on tariffs and would prefer to negotiate.
In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory while Seoul ended lower. Markets in Europe were trading higher. US markets ended in the green on Friday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.36 per cent to USD 80.50 a barrel.

From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Infosys dropped nearly 6 per cent despite raising its annual sales forecast for a third time this fiscal year.
Infosys Ltd, India's second-largest IT services firm, on Thursday reported an 11.46 per cent rise in the third quarter net profit on pick-up in demand, which also prompted the company to raise its annual sales forecast for a third time this fiscal year.
Axis Bank also declined by over 4 per cent post-earnings announcement.
Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finserv were the other big laggards from the pack.
In contrast, Reliance Industries climbed 2.50 per cent higher after the firm reported a 7.4 per cent rise in December quarter net profit as retail business rebounded, telecom earnings surged on higher tariffs and mainstay oil and petrochemicals business delivered consistent performance.
Zomato emerged as the biggest gainer, followed by Reliance, Nestle, Asian Paints and Power Grid.
In Asian markets, Seoul and Tokyo settled lower, while Shanghai and Hong Kong ended in positive territory.

In a volatile trade, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex declined 241.30 points or 0.31 per cent to settle at 77,378.91. During the day, the benchmark gyrated 820.15 points between the intraday high of 77,919.70 and a low of 77,099.55.
As many as 3,167 stocks declined, 827 advanced and 84 remained unchanged on the BSE.
The NSE Nifty dropped 95 points or 0.40 per cent to 23,431.50.
On the weekly front, the BSE benchmark slumped 1,844.2 points or 2.32 per cent, and the Nifty dropped 573.25 points or 2.38 per cent.
"Domestic market sentiment remained subdued due to rising crude oil prices, driven by supply concerns, and a strengthening dollar index. Despite the IT sector's resilience following positive early Q3 results, broader indices bled due to uncertainties surrounding Trump policies and high valuations.
"Consolidation may persist in the near term, yet investors are closely watching the US non-farm payroll data today for further guidance," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, IndusInd Bank, NTPC, UltraTech Cement, Sun Pharma, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, Tata Steel, Power Grid, Adani Ports and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the major laggards.
Tata Consultancy Services jumped nearly 6 per cent after the IT services company reported an 11.95 per cent jump in the December quarter net profit to Rs 12,380 crore.
Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Infosys and Bajaj Finserv were the other big gainers.
"Markets continued its downward trajectory as rupee scaling new lows due to strengthening dollar has further dampened investors&rsquo; sentiment. Amid concerns of subdued economic growth and expectations of a slowdown in the quarterly earnings, investors cut their bet on banking and mid and small-cap stocks.
"With expensive valuations of Indian markets at large still a concern, investors would mostly resort to stock-specific activities," Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said.
The BSE smallcap gauge dropped 2.40 per cent, and the midcap index declined 2.13 per cent.
Among BSE sectoral indices, power tanked 3.07 per cent, utilities (2.86 per cent), realty (2.64 per cent), industrials (2.08 per cent), commodities (2.05 per cent) and consumer durables (1.98 per cent).
BSE Focused IT jumped 3.17 per cent, IT (2.65 per cent) and teck (2.24 per cent) were the biggest gainers.

However, the market witnessed a recovery from the day&rsquo;s low owing to the accumulation of beaten-down blue-chip stocks and in expectation of government reforms in the upcoming budget to lift the tepid economy. India's economic growth rate is estimated to slip to a four-year low of 6.4 per cent in 2024-25, mainly on account of poor showing by the manufacturing and services sector, according to government data released on Tuesday.
The gross domestic product (GDP) rate of 6.4 per cent will be the lowest since the Covid year (2020-21) when the country witnessed a negative growth of 5.8 per cent. It was 9.7 per cent in 2021-22; 7 per cent in 2022-23; and 8.2 per cent in the last fiscal ended March 2024.
The BSE benchmark climbed 234.12 points or 0.30 per cent to settle at 78,199.11 on Tuesday. The Nifty gained 91.85 points or 0.39 per cent to 23,707.90.

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty rebounded on Tuesday after a sharp decline in the previous two sessions, driven by intense buying in blue-chip stocks like Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and L&amp;T amid a firm trend in global markets.
However, a decline in IT stocks ahead of the earnings season and a weak rupee against the greenback restricted the market rally, traders said.
The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex climbed 234.12 points or 0.30 per cent to settle at 78,199.11. During the day, it jumped 487.75 points or 0.62 per cent to 78,452.74.
The NSE Nifty gained 91.85 points or 0.39 per cent to 23,707.90.
From the 30-share blue-chip pack, Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, Asian Paints, Nestle India, UltraTech Cement, Larsen &amp; Toubro and Adani Ports were among the biggest gainers.
In contrast, Zomato, HCL Tech, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Infosys were among the losers.
In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, and Shanghai settled in positive territory while Hong Kong ended lower.
European markets were trading with gains in mid-session deals. US markets ended mostly higher on Monday.
The rupee fell 5 paise to settle at 85.73 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,575.06 crore on Monday, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.12 per cent to USD 76.21 a barrel.
In the previous session, the BSE benchmark tanked 1,258.12 points or 1.59 per cent to close below the 78,000 level at 77,964.99. The Nifty slumped 388.70 points or 1.62 per cent to 23,616.05.
