A state of emergency was declared on Friday when a volume of rain that would typically fall over an entire Southern Hemisphere summer hit in a single day.
At least 5,000 homes and businesses were being assessed for flood and landslide damage and several roads remained closed after more than 15 centimetres (6 inches) of rain fell in three hours.
The state of emergency for Auckland and surrounding districts was lifted on Monday morning. But Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown warned that dangerous conditions were forecast to return on Tuesday.
&ldquo;My team's current focus and our big worry is that some Aucklanders might think the worse is behind us, but it isn't,&rdquo; Brown told reporters.
Brown said up to 12 centimetres (almost 5 inches) of rain was forecast in some areas that were already waterlogged.
&ldquo;That's nothing like Friday night, but the ground is so saturated and the drains are so full that if anything, it could be more dangerous than even Friday,&rdquo; Brown said.

Brown said the number of residents of Auckland and surrounding areas asking for help due to storm damage would continue to rise.
&ldquo;It has taken some time for everyone to appreciate just how big and widespread an event this has been and it hasn't finished yet,&rdquo; Brown said.
&ldquo;The downfall was by far the biggest in our history. It was well beyond even what our emergency people either imagined or planned for,&rdquo; Brown added.
The heavy rain warning covered Auckland and further north on the North Island.
&ldquo;This rain is expected to cause dangerous river conditions and significant flooding. Slips and floodwaters are likely to disrupt travel, making some roads impassable and possibly isolating communities,&rdquo; a MetService statement said.
Auckland schools will remain closed until next week.
Auckland Airport has resumed operations that were shut down by the storm on Friday, but the airport warned in a statement that flight schedules might be disrupted for several days.

The city did not receive any rain in October 2020, 2018 and 2017 and logged 47.3 mm of rainfall in October 2019.
The rainfall over the last three days is the second prolonged spell within three weeks.
The capital had logged a late spell of monsoon rains from September 21 to September 24 due to an interaction between a cyclonic circulation and a low-pressure system.
However, the current rains in Delhi are not monsoon showers, which receded from the city on September 29 after giving 516.9 mm of rainfall against a normal of 653.6 mm, the IMD said.
The incessant rains, the result of an interaction between a western disturbance and a deep trough of easterly winds, also helped meet the yearly quota (774.4 mm) of precipitation.

The capital recorded 31 per cent surplus rain in September -- 164.5 mm against a normal of 125.1 mm.

Speaking to the reporters on the situation, Bommai said that only two zones in Bengaluru bore the brunt of rains although a picture was being painted as if the entire Bengaluru was struggling.&nbsp;
He further added that his government has taken it as a "challenge" to restore normalcy and engineers and workers and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are working round the clock.

At least 31 people were killed, 22 of them in Himachal Pradesh alone, as heavy monsoon rains triggered flashfloods, landslides, and house collapses, upending normal life across large swathes of the country.
The fatalities included four each in Uttarakhand and Odisha, and one in Jharkhand.
Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh since Friday caused landslides and flashfloods, with officials saying 22 people, including eight members of a family, died. Ten people were injured in the state which has reported 36 weather-related incidents.
As many as 743 roads, including the Manali-Chandigarh national highway at Mandi and the Shimla-Chandigath highway at Shoghi, have been blocked for traffic.
In Mandi alone, 13 people died and six went missing in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall, Deputy Commissioner Arindam Chaudhary said. Those missing are feared dead, he said.
The Chakki bridge in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra collapsed due to heavy rains on Saturday, disrupting train services between Pathankot and Jogindernagar.

Water levels in Subarnarekha, Budhabalang, Baitarani and Salandi are being monitored as Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj received heavy rain on the previous night, Odisha Water Resources Chief Engineer B K Mishra said on Saturday.
In the neighbouring Jharkhand, heavy rainfall associated with high-speed winds since Friday evening uprooted scores of trees and electricity poles, and submerged low-lying areas in many districts.
A woman died when a mud wall of her house caved in on her in West Singhbhum district on Saturday morning as the deep depression that crossed the Odisha coast on the previous evening brought incessant rainfall in several areas, an official said.
Normal life was thrown out of gear with rain disrupting power supply in many areas for long hours and causing traffic jams in major cities.
Two flights have also been cancelled till 2 pm due to bad weather on Saturday, officials at Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi told PTI.

Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh since Friday caused landslides and flashfloods, with officials saying 22 people, including eight members of a family, died. Ten people were injured in the state which has reported 36 weather-related incidents.
As many as 743 roads, including the Manali-Chandigarh national highway at Mandi and the Shimla-Chandigath highway at Shoghi, have been blocked for traffic.
In Mandi alone, 13 people died and six went missing in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall, Deputy Commissioner Arindam Chaudhary said. Those missing are feared dead, he said.
The Chakki bridge in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra collapsed due to heavy rains on Saturday, disrupting train services between Pathankot and Jogindernagar.

A school bus with over 24 children got stuck in a drain on a water-logged road amid heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh's Shajapur district. 
A video of the incident shows children shouting from the bus for help while villagers made attempts to pull the half-submerged bus out of the water. 
The villagers tied one end of a rope to a tractor and the other end to the bus in order to pull the bus out of the drain.

Gates of some major dams in Madhya Pradesh have been opened after continuous rainfall caused water levels in some rivers to rise.
The state's lifeline, Narmada river, besides Parvati, Betwa and some other water bodies were in spate, but flowing below the danger level, said Kamlesh Raikwar, an executive engineer of the state water resources department.
The gates of 14 out of 52 reservoirs have been opened to release water, he said.
At least 12 gates of Indira Sagar, which is the state's biggest dam, 18 of Omkareshwar, eight of Rajghat and nine of Tawa dam have been opened, the official said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an orange alert warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in eight districts of central Madhya Pradesh.
The IMD's orange alert forecasts very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, ranging from 115.6 mm or above, at isolated places in Bhopal, Raisen, Rajgarh, Sehore, Vidisha, Guna, Agar Malwa and Shajapur districts.
Apart from this, a yellow alert has been issued warning of likely heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places of 10 districts, and Shahdol and Narmadapuram divisions.

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of rain intensity increasing over the next 4-5 days in the Konkan, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, and parts of Marathwada.
On 9 July, heavy precipitation was reported from Gadchiroli, Hingoli, and Nanded districts. In Gadchiroli, communication with over 120 villages was lost.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called up Hingoli's district collector regarding evacuations and providing relief. Around 200 people were evacuated, and no casualties were reported on 9 July.
Meanwhile, worrying visuals also emerged from Karnataka. Water levels in the Madagh Masur lake in Haveri were seen rising amid incessant rain on 9 July.

A four-storeyed building collapsed in Chopal town of Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district after heavy rains on Saturday. The building housed a bank, a bar, a dhaba and other shops.
According to officials there was no loss of life due to timely evacuation. 
As per media reports, some men sitting in the bar noticed sudden cracks in the windows and ran out of the building while alerting others. 
The weather officer has predicted  widespread moderate to heavy rainfall in Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Kangra, Bilaspur districts and adjoining areas including Shimla town for Saturday and Sunday. 
There is a high probability of one or two spells of very heavy rainfall in parts of these districts during this period, it added.
The department warned that downpours may cause traffic disruptions, landslides, increased runoff in nullahs, rivers and other channels leading to flash floods and poor visibility conditions.
It is advised to take adequate safety measures to avoid any untoward incident, the MeT office suggested.
Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in high hills including parts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts, it added.
