T20 World Cup: New Zealand vs Afghanistan washed out without a ball being bowled

The T20 World Cup Super 12 game between New Zealand and Afghanistan that was to be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was washed out after incessant rain in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The Group 1 match was to start at 1.30 pm IST but was abandoned without a ball being bowled. While rain forced the umpires to call off the match, the 2 teams who had played 1 match each prior to this game were awarded one point each.

While several places in Australia are receiving heavy rainfall, there is a shower forecast on Friday as well when the hosts play against England at the MCG. This might further impact the English team's campaign which lost by 5 runs (DLS) to Ireland earlier in the day in a rain-interrupted game.
