'Ponniyin Selvan' crossed the lifetime collection of 'Vikram' in Tamil Nadu and became the highest grossing film in the state

&lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan: I&rsquo;, directed by Mani Ratnam, has created magic at the box office. The film is now the highest grossing Tamil film of all-time, surpassing Kamal Haasan starrer &lsquo;Vikram&rsquo;s lifetime earnings of ₹183 crore in the state, according to trade analysts.
The film surpassed &lsquo;Vikram&rsquo; to become the highest grosser in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and closed the day with a total of ₹186 crore. According to some sources, the film will have an uninterrupted run till Diwali, so it'll comfortably cross the ₹200 crore mark in Tamil Nadu.
'At the end of Wednesday, PS1&rsquo;s Tamil Nadu gross stood at around ₹186 crore. It has beaten Vikram&rsquo;s lifetime collection in TN in less than two weeks. With no major releases till Diwali, PS1 will comfortably cross ₹200 crore mark in Tamil Nadu and it&rsquo;s not going to be easy for any other film to beat the record,' trade analyst Trinath said.
&lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan: I&rsquo; has earned over ₹400 crore globally and is inching closer to the ₹450 crore mark. He added that the film will end its theatrical run with over ₹500 crore gross earnings.
&lsquo;PS1&rsquo; narrated the tale of early life of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who later became the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947&ndash;1014). Actor Jayam Ravi plays the role of Arulmozhivarman in the film. The film also stars Aishwarya Rai, Vikram among others in pivotal role. The film released in theatres September 30.

'Ponniyin Selvan' starts with an awesome weekend at the Indian box office with earnings of approximately Rs. 114 crores. The film has the second biggest weekend opening in the history of Kollywood following 2.0. The film 2.0 earned mostly for its Hindi and Telugu versions, while PS-1 earned its biggest share in its Tamil version. The film has beaten Vikram Vedha with approximately Rs 90 crore.  
'Ponniyin Selvan' is the third biggest opener ever in the state after Beast and Sarkar. The film got competition from Naane Varuvean for loss of screenings costing it Rs. 4-5 crores over the weekend.
There are so many expectations from the film during the Dusshera festivities as it has ranked in the movies earning over Rs. 10 crores in pre-sales for Monday. The movie’s goal is to beat Vikram's full run numbers in Tamil Nadu and set a new benchmark gross of Rs. 200 crores in the state.  
The movie earned Rs 38.50 crores on Friday, Rs. 36 crores on Saturday and Rs. 39 crores on Sunday making a total of Rs. 113.50 crores.

The movie earned Rs 38.50 crores on Friday, Rs. 36 crores on Saturday and Rs. 39 crores on Sunday making a total of Rs. 113.50 crores. &nbsp;This is the second biggest weekend opening in the history of Kollywood following '2.0', which earned mostly from its Hindi and Telugu versions. PS-1's major earnings come from its Tamil version.&nbsp;
'Ponniyin Selvan' is the third biggest opener ever in Tamil Nadu after 'Beast' and 'Sarkar'. It could have done better, but there was a loss of screenings as it faced competition from Selvaraghavan's 'Naane Varuvean'. The loss costed the film Rs. 4-5 crores over the weekend.
According to film trade analyst, Ramesh Bala, 'PS-1' has grossed over Rs 230 crore at the worldwide box office.&nbsp;

Its advance booking was opened on Sunday, September 25, and the numbers are quite good.    In a recent interview, the filmmaker Mani Ratnam opened up about his first epic period drama and said, ‘The issues are all real and relevant even today. It was there 1,000 years ago and a lot of this is still common. The politics, struggle for power, and agony it brings… Every person will be able to identify with something or the other in the film.’    In an interview with PTI, Ratnam discussed his passion for making this movie which is based on a Tamil Novel of the same name. He said, ‘It was the first big Tamil adventure that I was reading and it was fascinating. He had written in such a fashion that it was a spectacle and very vivid. I could visualise while reading it.’    He also talked about the cast of the film ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I' and said, ‘We had Vikram first, it was a difficult role. It is important to have actors who believe in the film… If you have the right cast, then every character stands out.’    The fimmaker also talked about working with Shah Rukh Khan again. In an interview with Pinkvilla he said, ‘You should ask Shah Rukh... I should have a script ready for him, that’s when I can go to him. So it’s all a function of a script. We just met each other in a function, that’s all. Like I am telling you it’s driven by an idea of a script. Once you have an idea for which Shah Rukh will be right, then I’ll go and ask him.’ He has worked with SRK in ‘Dil Se.’     Mani Ratnam splitted the film ‘Ponniyin Selvan:I' into two parts. He is likely to be discharged on Tuesday, according to news agency PTI.
&lsquo;Sources said the ace director was taken to the hospital with symptoms of fever today and he underwent a checkup. He had tested negative for<a href="https://www.editorji.com/coronavirus" target="_blank"> COVID-19</a>, and is likely to be discharged today, the source added," PTI quoted a source as saying.
On the work front, Mani Ratnam is awaiting the release of the period drama &lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan&rsquo;, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Karthi and Jayam Ravi among many others. The teaser of the film was released recently and it has been making headlines ever since. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is all set to return to the big screen with director Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan.' The makers of the film unveiled the first look poster of Aishwarya on Wednesday introducting her as Nandini, the Queen of Pazhuvoor. Sharing the poster, Lyca Productions wrote, 'Vengeance has a beautiful face!' 
Nandini is the wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, portaryed by Sarathkumar., who conspires the downfall of the Chola dynasty. The actor will also feature as Mandakini Devi, mother of Nandini in the film.
