About 20,000 farmers from 200 unions in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are headed to the national capital on tractors, prepared to camp outside Delhi borders for the long haul. In addition to a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP) for crops, debt waivers and pension, a key demand of the 'Delhi Chalo' protest march is "justice" for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
Farmers were camped at Tikunia in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh in 2021, blocking highways to Delhi, in protest against the now repealed farm laws, when four of them were mowed down by a car. A driver and two BJP workers were allegedly lynched in retaliation by angry farmers. A journalist also died in the violence that ensued.&nbsp;
A special investigation team of the UP Police has charged Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra's son Ashish Mishra of murder and criminal conspiracy, as he was allegedly driving the vehicle. He is out on bail.

The Central government had reached out to the farmers ahead of 'Delhi Chalo' march, in an attempt to reach a compromise and prevent a repeat of the 2021 showdown. Reports suggest the government has agreed to provide compensation to Lakhimpur Kheri victims and withdraw cases against farmers.
However, farmers decided to go ahead with their march to Delhi, demanding an MSP guarantee for all crops, farm loan waivers and the implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha said on Tuesday that the Modi government should stop shielding Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni, whose son was arrested in connection with the October 3 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, and dismiss him from the post.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case in which eight people died has urged the chief judicial magistrate to replace lesser charges in the case like causing death by negligence with attempt to murder, saying that it was a "pre-planned conspiracy causing death".
Responding to the SIT investigation, the umbrella body of farmers' unions said the finding has reaffirmed its stand that the incident was a "pre-planned massacre".
"Meanwhile, the chief mastermind of the incident, Ajay Mishra Teni continues to roam free and hold his position in the Union government. In the light of the latest findings, the SKM demands that the Modi government stop shielding this 'conspirator of the Kisan Massacre in Lakhimpur Kheri', and reiterates its demand for his dismissal and arrest," SKM said in a statement.
It added that the SKM will continue its struggle on this issue.
The SIT urged the CJM to replace IPC sections 279 (rash driving/riding), 338 (causing grievous injuries by negligence) and 304A (causing death by a rash and negligent act) with IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) among others in the case related to the October 3 violence, in which four farmers were among those killed.
The SIT retained IPC sections 302 (murder), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Questioning delay in the arrest of the accused, the court asked the UP govt "what is the message that you are sending?".

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh cam under <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/sc-to-hear-akhimpur-violence-case-tomorrow-1633536752249">Supreme Court</a> fire on Friday over the handling of the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/local/lakhimpur-kheri-violence-2-arrested-minister-ajay-mishra-s-son-untraceable-1633607207241">Lakhimpur violence</a>, which has triggered nationwide outrage.
Criticised by the top court, the state government admitted that "enough has not been done".&nbsp;

The UP Police on Thursday arrested two persons in the Lakhimpur Kheri case while the accused Ashish Mishra, the son of union minister of state Ajay Mishra is still untraceable. 
Police said the two arrested, identified as Luvkush Rana and Ashish Pandey are close aides of Asish. 
More raids are underway, the police added.

8 people, including 4 farmers, were mowed down last Sunday allegedly by the vehicle of the minister during a farmer protest in&nbsp;Lakhimpur&nbsp;Kheri.

Further raids are on in search of other accused identified so far, a&nbsp;Lakhimpur&nbsp;police official said.

"We need to know who are the accused against whom FIR has been filed &amp; if they have been arrested," the court told the UP government.
The court decided to take up the case amid a growing outcry over UP Police's handling of the investigation, media reports and a letter written to the Chief Justice by two lawyers from the state. The letter had called for a CBI probe under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
The court also directed the state government to provide all medical care to the mother of one of the deceased who is in critical condition.
The UP govt lawyer informed the top court that a commission of enquiry has been formed to probe the violence.
