Day-long bandh in Maharashtra over Lakhimpur farmers' killings

The Maharashtra's ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance has called a day-long bandh today in solidarity with the farmers killed in Lakhimpur Kehri violence last Sunday.

The state government has said that everything will be closed except for essential services.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said all the three parties of the ruling alliance will actively participate in the bandh. "What happened in Lakhimpur Kheri was a murder of the Constitution, a violation of the law and a conspiracy to kill farmers of the country," he added.

Several trade organisations have expressed support to the bandh. Earlier, the traders had objected to the bandh saying their business was just limping back after being severely hit by Covid.

Transport is also likely to be hit in cities such as Pune as rickshaw unions have decided to not ply their vehicles during the bandh.

The ruling alliance has made it clear that the bandh has been called by the political parties and is not state sponsored.
