'How many have you arrested?': SC asks UP govt on Lakhimpur killings

The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the UP govt how many people have been arrested in connection with the killings in Lakhimpur on Sunday.

The top court asked the state government to file a status report by Friday on the violence that left 8, including 4 farmers, dead.

"We need to know who are the accused against whom FIR has been filed & if they have been arrested," the court told the UP government.

The court decided to take up the case amid a growing outcry over UP Police's handling of the investigation, media reports and a letter written to the Chief Justice by two lawyers from the state. The letter had called for a CBI probe under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

The court also directed the state government to provide all medical care to the mother of one of the deceased who is in critical condition.

The UP govt lawyer informed the top court that a commission of enquiry has been formed to probe the violence.
