Javed Akhtar, tackling trolls and advocating artist rights, reflects on his iconic film legacy and its cultural impact.

As someone who often schools faceless people on social media for their communal and hateful remarks, veteran screenwriter-poet Javed Akhtar says trolls should know they can also be subjected to the same treatment when the need arises.
Whether it's supporting Indian cricketer Mohd Shami during the recent 'roza' row, getting back at trolls who targeted him for praising Virat Kohli or condemning the Pahalgam terror attack in strong words, the lyricist is known for openly voicing his opinions on X.
Asked whether his family asks him to steer clear of social media trolls, Akhtar told PTI, "Yes, absolutely. Even my friends say 'let it be. Why do you want to get into it? You are above all these things. Forgive me for my immodesty; I mostly feel above these trolls, but sometimes you have to come down and tell them that, 'No, you can't take this liberty, and if you do, I'll pay you back in the same coin." The 80-year-old writer, who also serves as the chairperson of the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS), was speaking on the sidelines of the "IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP" conference organized by FICCI on Tuesday here.
Akhtar, who took over the IPRS in 2017, said the copyright body needs government support so that artists receive their fair share of public performance royalty.
"If there are a few lakh people who are not paying us public performance royalty, we can't have a few lakh cases in courts, it is not possible. It is only the government that can put pressure by making some kind of a rule or a sub-rule to make it mandatory to pay.
"Whenever I have contacted any political party or ministry, they have been extremely sympathetic about the cause. They have respect for Indian artists; they have often gone out of their way to help us. I have no such problems. What we have to do now is to go again (to the authorities) and tell them what is wrong. You have made a fantastic law, but it is not working on the ground," he said.
"Sholay" and "Deewar", which he co-wrote with Salim Khan, are celebrating their 50th release anniversary. Asked what was the reason behind the enduring relevance of these films, the writer said it's impossible to predict how a movie is going to connect with people while writing it.
"Kuch achhe kaam hote hain jo reh jaate hain public memory mein (there are a few good works that remain etched in public memory). And the films you're talking about they have somehow (have stayed in public memory)... Why, I don't know. If I knew, I would've done it again and again. They have become a part of the Indian psyche, culture, and common language.
"Dialogues of a 50-year-old film are being referenced in stand-up comedy, other films, and even in political speeches till today. How and why has it happened? I mean, what is charisma? There is no definition of charisma. It happens, and then you try to reason it out, find some rationale or logic in it. But I think it is beyond it," he added.

In a recent interview, Javed Akhtar, who has previously criticised the film, once again called out the misogyny in the film. He denied watching the film and said that people told him about the controversial &lsquo;lick my shoe&rsquo; scene, and asked why would he watch it. On being asked why the idea of a hero as an &lsquo;angry young man&rsquo; still exists in the South film industry, the famous lyricist said, &ldquo;Wahan (in south) bhi dekhiye woh ultimately apna caricature ban raha hai (There also you can see that ultimately he is becoming a caricature of himself).&rdquo;&nbsp;
<h2>Javed Akhtar slams Yash Chopra&rsquo;s film&nbsp;</h2>
Speaking about the portrayal of modern women in films, Javed Akhtar mentioned Yash Chopra&rsquo;s &lsquo;Jab Tak Hai Jaan&rsquo;. He cited a dialogue in the film. &nbsp;
Javed said, "Ek picture thi Yash Chopra saab ki, Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Usme ek dialogue he from one of the heroines, &lsquo;Mein duniya mein jitni nationalities hein, har nationality ke ek admi ke ladke ke saath sone ke baad shaadi karungi!&rsquo; Arre bhai tu itni mehnat kyu karegi? Tu empowered hain? Tu modern hain? Tu cool hain? Tu forward thinking hain? Maan jaate hei na&hellip; itni mehnat karne ki zaroorat nahi hain tumko! Bahoot nationalities hain duniya mein us chakkar mein mat paro (There was a Yash Chopra film named Jab Tak Hai Jaan, in which there is a dialogue where one of the heroines says that I will marry you after I sleep with one man from all the nationalities. But why would you do so much hard work? Are you empowered and modern and cool? We agree so you let go of that hard work. There are a lot of nationalities)."&nbsp;
He went on to say that because the filmmakers are not very clear what is an empowered girl so they are exaggerating. The veteran lyricist added that the filmmakers are confused about the idea of a modern Indian woman. &nbsp;

Actor Anil Kapoor hosted a lavish birthday celebration in honor of lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar as he marked another year of life.
The event saw the presence of numerous celebrities, including Madhuri Dixit, Sonam Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Farhan Akhtar, Boney Kapoor, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti, who came together to commemorate the veteran's special day.
As the media had gathered outside the venue, Javed Akhtar, accompanied by his friends and family, came out to pose for photographs.
Several photographers were repeatedly calling his name while he was trying to take pictures with his wife, Shabana Azmi, displeased with the commotion, the lyricist politely requested them to maintain silence.
Javed Akhtar also took the opportunity to pose for photographs with his children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, outside his residence.
Additionally, his close friends Boney Kapoor and Anil Kapoor joined in the celebrations. Sonam Kapoor and her husband, Anand Ahuja, were among the guests as well.
Sonam opted for an experimental black jumpsuit, while Anand went for a casual look for the evening. Other notable attendees at the party included Divya Dutta, Ashutosh Gowariker, Anupam Kher, Ritesh Sidwani, and Rajkumar Hirani.
Madhuri Dixit made a striking entrance at the celebration alongside her husband, Dr. Shriram Nene. Madhuri looked elegant in a yellow saree paired with a matching jacket. Farhan Akhtar arrived with his wife, Shibani Dandekar. Notably, Javed Akhtar's first wife, Honey Irani, was also seen at the event. The film, which marks the acting debut of Shah Rukh Khan&rsquo;s daughter Suhana Khan, Amitabh Bachchan&rsquo;s grandson Agastya Nanda, and Boney Kapoor&rsquo;s daughter Khushi Kapoor, has rekindled the debate around nepotism in Bollywood.
Now, Javed Akhtar addressed this at Sahitya Aajtak 2023.
Javed said, &lsquo;She has all the right to take anybody under the sun, she shouldn&rsquo;t be questioned. She is taking the risk, it is her project and she is backing it.&rsquo;
Javed added that when a filmmaker makes a movie, they take personal risks with their own money. They do not involve the government or some industrialist&rsquo;s money, thus they have the right to cast whoever they want, without being questioned.
Javed added, &lsquo;Film industry ke baare mein baat hoti rehti hain nepotism ki. Nepotism film industry mein ho hi nahi sakta. Duniya mein har jagah ho jaye, par yaha nahi ho sakta&hellip; Lekin, yahan nepotism isiliye nahi hain kyuki aadmi yaha khud risk le raha hain. Wo kisi aur ke kandhe pe bandook rakhe huye hain (There is a lot of talk about nepotism in the film industry, but it cannot exist here. It can exist anywhere in the world but not here because people take risks here and don&rsquo;t depend on other people).&rsquo;
&lsquo;The Archies&rsquo; also stars Vedang Raina, Dot, Mihir Ahuja and Yuvraj Menda.
Speaking to Film Companion earlier, Zoya and Reema also addressed this debate.
Zoya said, &lsquo;What I find fascinating is that there were seven kids on the poster. Netflix and Tiger Baby put seven kids on the poster and the media only spoke about three, and then turns around and tells us about nepotism. I mean, you&rsquo;re the one not giving the other four attention.&rsquo;

Veteran poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who attended a Deepotsav programme organised by Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in Mumbai, praised the Hindu community for being tolerant at the event.
He added that &lsquo;democracy exists in India because of Hindu culture and tradition&rsquo;.
Akhtar said that Hindus are generous and large-hearted.
&lsquo;There are some people who have always been intolerant. Hindus are not like that. They have this great quality - generous and large-hearted. Don't lose that, else you will become like others,&rsquo; he said.
Akhtar also said, &lsquo;We have learned from Hindus' way of living. Will you leave that?&rsquo;
Javed Akhtar further said that he was proud to have been born in the land of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita and said he considers them to be the wealth of this country.
&lsquo;This is Hindu culture, this is civilisation. It has taught us democratic attitudes. That's why there is democracy in this country. Thinking that we are right and everyone else is wrong is not the work of Hindus. Whoever taught you this is wrong,&rsquo; he said.
Noted screenwriter Salim Khan, one half of the legendary Salim-Javed duo who wrote some of the most iconic Bollywood films, including 'Sholay', was seated beside his former partner.
Actor-filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh was also present at the event.

Christopher Nolan&rsquo;s &lsquo;Oppenheimer&rsquo; was released in theatres on July 21 and it majorly received great reviews around the world. In India, the Cillian Murphy starrer made headlines over a controversial sex scene.
Now, veteran lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has reviewed the Hollywood movie on Twitter. He called it &lsquo;not just a good film but a great film&rsquo;.
A person tried to mock the lyricist and in response to his tweet, he asked him to explain the term isotope. In response, Javed Akhtar not only explained the term but also said that knowing some scientific terms was not necessary to understand the film as it is a story of a human being, who happens to be a scientist.
A section of people agreed with Javed's take on the film.
One wrote called &lsquo;Oppenheimer&rsquo; one of the greatest films ever. Another said, &lsquo;Christopher Nolan is happy. This is going to boost attendance.&rsquo;
After a fantastic opening weekend, Christopher Nolan's film slowed down significantly during the week. According to a report on Sacnilk.com, the film&rsquo;s six-day total now stands at ₹67.85 crore nett in India.
Christopher Nolan's eagerly-anticipated &lsquo;Oppenheimer&rsquo; is based on American physicist J Robert Oppenheimer. The film also stars Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Kenneth Branagh, and Rami Malek.

Court on Kangana Ranaut complaint: &lsquo;I have come to the conclusion that there are sufficient grounds to proceed against the accused for offence under IPC section 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman).&rsquo;

Lyricist Javed Akhtar has been summoned by a Mumbai court based on a counter-complaint filed against him by actor Kangana Ranaut for alleged &lsquo;extortion and criminal intimidation&rsquo;.
He will appear before the court on August 5.
According to PTI, while summoning him, the court said that there was indeed sufficient ground to proceed against Mr Akhtar for the offence of criminal intimidation and gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
 &lsquo;As far as other offences levelled against the accused are concerned, on the basis of averments in the complaint, verification of the complainant and statement of her (Kangana's) sister Rangoli Chandel," the court said.
&nbsp;&lsquo;I have come to the conclusion that there are sufficient grounds to proceed against the accused for offence under IPC section 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman),&rsquo; the court added.
Mumbai court dropped charges of extortion against Javed Akhtar filed by Kangana Ranaut and stated that asking a person to give a written apology will not come under the definition of valuable security.
For the unversed, Javed Akhtar filed a complaint against Kangana in 2020 after she accused him of threatening her in an interview.
She had claimed that the lyricist threatened her after calling her to his home amid her ugly fight with Hrithik Roshan over their alleged affair.
Kangana had then filed a counter-complaint against Javed Akhtar for alleged &lsquo;extortion and criminal intimidation&rsquo;.

Renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar appeared at the Andheri Magistrate court in Mumbai in connection with a criminal defamation case he filed against actor Kangana Ranaut. He revealed what exactly happened the night he met Kangana at his home.
He recalled advising Kangana on her spat with Hrithik Roshan and asking her not to wash dirty linen in public. Mr Akhtar also said he had nothing to do with the controversy between the two actors.
As per an India Today report, Javed told the court that he did not know Kangana at the time. It was their common friend Dr Ramesh Agrawal, who wanted to advice Kangana on what to do about her feud with Hrithik Roshan.
He added, &lsquo;It is true to say that Kangana was not ready to listen to my words and she left the house with her elder sister Rangoli. It is not true to say that she was upset with my statement despite politely coming for the meeting.&rsquo;
As per PTI, in the court, when Javed Akhtar was asked whether Kangana and her sister Rangoli came to his house &lsquo;obediently&rsquo;, he replied, &lsquo;You expect obedience from Kangana, it is not called obedience, but possibility for something... some kind of a solution. Physical reality is they came to my house, but obedience is a notion only in mind.&rsquo;
&lsquo;I had told her about the agenda of the meeting on call. Didn't call her to discuss the weather, political situation or America election in 2016,&rsquo; he said.
Javed Akhtar also shared what Kangana said in an interview in 2020 claiming that he asked her to apologise to her co-star Hrithik Roshan was &lsquo;nothing but a lie&rsquo;.
In 2016, Hrithik Roshan filed a lawsuit against Kangana seeking an apology after their public spat over a statement on their alleged relationship.
&lsquo;Once Javed Akhtar called me to his house and told me Rakesh Roshan (father of Hrithik Roshan) and his family are very big people. If you don't apologise to them, you will have nowhere to go. They will put you in jail, and eventually, the only path would be that of destruction&hellip; you will commit suicide. These were his words. He shouted and yelled at me. I was shaking in his house,&rsquo; Kangana had told the news channel.

Kangana Ranaut is back in news again and yet again for the wrong reasons. This time round the actor took Filmfare head-on after she was nominated for the Best Actress award for her role in ‘Thalaivii’. After the film magazine removed her from the list of nominated, the actor decided to sue the publication.

Speaking at an ABP event, Javed repeated his statement from that event and added, &lsquo;It became too big, it feels embarrassing, feel like I should not go (for such events). Yaha aya to laga pata nahi third World War jeet ke aya hoon (as if I won the third world war). The people and the media have so many reactions. I was embarrrased aisa kya keh diya? Itni baat to kehni padegi, chup rahein kya (we have to say as much, should we just shut up)?&rsquo;
Mr Akhtar said he has received messages that people in Pakistan are questioning how he got a visa, and added that he may only recall the place now.

Pakistani singer Ali Zafar took to social media to condemn lyricist Javed Akhtar&rsquo;s comment about the 26/11 terror attacks he made at an event in Lahore. The singer, who has worked in Bollywood films like &lsquo;Mere Brother Ki Dulhan&rsquo; and &lsquo;Dear Zindagi&rsquo;, called the remark &lsquo;insensitive&rsquo; and &lsquo;uncalled for&rsquo;. He also clarified that while he performed for Mr Akhtar when he was in the country, it wasn&rsquo;t on the same day as the incident.
&lsquo;I am a proud Pakistani and naturally no Pakistani would appreciate any statement against its country or people specially at an event meant to bring hearts closer than further. We all know how much Pakistan has suffered and continues to suffer at the hands of terrorism and such insensitive and uncalled-for remarks can deeply hurt the sentiments of so many people,&rsquo; he said.

Out of 24 hours, we would spend 15-16 hours with each other. But as we became successful, new people came into our lives and our friend's circle got separated. The mental rapport we had was broken. The legendary lyricist was previously married to actor Honey Irani with whom he has two children - Farhan and Zoya Akhtar.
In 1970s, he used to study music at poet, writer Kaifi Azmi&rsquo;s house. Mr Akhtar fell in love with his daughter, actor Shabana Azmi while pursuing his studies. Lyricist Javed Akhtar and &lsquo;KGF&rsquo; actor Anant Nag are the latest celebrities to weigh in on the ongoing controversy over &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo;s song &lsquo;Besharam Rang&rsquo;. The song featuring Deepika Padukone in an orange bikini irked several people. A section of society claimed the colour is sacred in Hinduism, while some objected to the title of the film which happens to be a particular ethnic group.
Commenting on the same, Javed Akhtar said, &lsquo;If he (the minister) thinks there should be a separate censor board for Madhya Pradesh, they (should) watch the film separately. And if they are unhappy with the Centre's film certification, we should not come in between them, it is between them and the Centre.&rsquo;
When asked about the recently constituted 'Dharma Censor Board', Javed said, &lsquo;There is one censor board in MP, then this is there and one censor board of the centre is also there. What is the problem? We have four-five important 'dharmas' and they should have their censors. Maybe then moulvis (under Islam) will start watching films. Do it, do it!&rsquo;
&lsquo;It is not for me or you to decide whether the song is right or wrong. We have an agency,&rsquo; he added. Javed Akhtar said the people should trust the certification provided by the censor board and the cuts they suggest.
On the other hand, veteran actor Anant Nag slammed the costume worn by Deepika Padukone in the &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo;
Speaking with Asianet, Anant Nag described the song as having &lsquo;nudity content&rsquo;. &lsquo;Showing women in such a way is not part of our Indian culture. If the censor team had done their job, this wouldn&rsquo;t have happened in the first place,&rdquo; he said, adding, &ldquo;Forget about movies, look at OTT content, they show all sorts of nasty and offensive stuff. Everything is openly shown and no one is there to stop them,&rsquo; he said.
The actor concluded, &lsquo;The Indian Cinema should stop such nudity content on big and small screens. Showing things against our culture and tradition will definitely cause conflicts among the people.&rsquo;
&lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo;, directed by Sidharth Anand, will release on January 25..
