Glenn Maxwell, whose IPL career over the last decade has largely been underwhelming, decided to pull out of the upcoming mini auctions scheduled in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
The 37-year-old, popularly known as "Big Show" for being a phenomenal talent in his younger days, has played every IPL season since 2012, barring one in 2019. He has managed only 2819 runs in 141 games at a strike rate of 155 plus and an average of less than 24, which doesn't justify the kind of prices that he has been consistently fetching in auctions over the years. He also picked 41 wickets with his off-breaks at an economy rate of 8.30.
"After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I 've decided not to put my name into auctions this year. It's a big call and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me," Maxwell wrote on his Instagram page.&nbsp;

While Maxwell didn&rsquo;t specify a reason, it is evident that most major franchises have grown weary of waiting for him to deliver a good season, something that has been rare. His multi-million dollar bids at auction often defied logic with franchise owners attributing it to market forces. But with increased use of data analytics, it has become clear that Maxwell was being paid way more than he ever deserved.
Out of 13 seasons that he has played, only once in 2021 did he cross 500 runs -- 513 with six fifties and a strike rate of 144 plus. That he is no longer an attractive commodity in the IPL market was evident across last two seasons (2024 and 2025) where he totalled a lowly 100 runs in 17 games with aggregate of 52 and 48 runs respectively.
During the last season, he had left after playing seven games and didn't come back when IPL resumed post Operation Sindoor.

Glenn Maxwell, one of Australia's most impactful white-ball cricketers, has officially retired from One-Day Internationals, drawing the curtain on a 13-year career that featured explosive batting, handy off-spin, and unmatched fielding brilliance.
The 36-year-old made his ODI debut in 2012 and went on to play 149 matches, scoring nearly 4,000 runs. Maxwell had long hinted that the physical demands of the 50-over format were wearing him down, especially following a serious leg injury in 2022. He confirmed his decision during this year&rsquo;s Champions Trophy in a conversation with selection chief George Bailey.
&ldquo;I said to him right then and there, &lsquo;I don&rsquo;t think I&rsquo;m going to make that&rsquo;,&rdquo; Maxwell said on the Final Word podcast, referring to the 2027 ODI World Cup. &ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s time to start planning for people in my position, to have a crack at it and try and make that spot their own for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in where they can have success in that role.&rdquo;
Although his finger injury ruled him out of the 2025 Indian Premier League, Maxwell had already made up his mind about retiring from ODIs before that setback. His departure adds to a recent wave of senior Australian exits from the format, following Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith, and David Warner. That leaves the reigning World Cup champions facing a significant rebuild ahead of the next tournament.
Maxwell, however, will continue playing T20 internationals and has not retired from first-class cricket. He explained that his decision was heavily influenced by how his body responded during the Champions Trophy.
&ldquo;My decision to retire from one-day international cricket was probably more on the back of the first couple of games in the Champions Trophy,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I felt like I gave myself a really good opportunity to be fit and ready for those games. The first game in Lahore, we played on a rock-hard outfield. Post that game I was pretty sore.
&ldquo;We were lucky enough to have a washout against South Africa, where I had a bit more time to have a bit of rest and get myself ready for the next game. The following game against Afghanistan, we fielded for 50 overs on a really, really wet outfield. It was slippery, it was soft, and I just didn&rsquo;t pull up that well.&rdquo;
As the tournament wore on, it became clear that the grind of ODIs was taking a toll.
&ldquo;I started to realise that if I don&rsquo;t have the perfect conditions in 50-over cricket, my body just struggles to get through that,&rdquo; Maxwell admitted. &ldquo;It feels like it&rsquo;s a tiring affair just to get through &ndash; and almost surviving &ndash; the 50 overs, let alone being at my best throughout that 50 overs, and then going out there and trying to perform with the bat as well.
&ldquo;I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions.&rdquo;
Maxwell leaves a remarkable statistical legacy. Among batters to score at least 2,000 ODI runs, he finishes with the highest strike-rate in history&mdash;126.70.
Only Andre Russell (130.22) ranks higher in terms of strike-rate among players with at least 400 runs. Maxwell also took 77 wickets and was widely regarded as one of the best fielders of his generation.
His unforgettable double-century against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup will likely stand as the defining highlight of his ODI career. Battling severe cramps, Maxwell carried Australia from the brink of defeat to a miraculous win.
Maxwell came in against Afghanistan with his side reeling at 7-91. In a high-pressure situation and battling severe cramps in searing heat, he smashed 201 off just 128 balls to snatch victory from jaws of defeat. Australia went on to win the World Cup, beating favourites India in Ahmedabad.
Reflecting on that moment in his 2024 autobiography The Showman, Maxwell wrote: &ldquo;This was a moment, like Steve Waugh&rsquo;s Ashes ton on the last ball of the day, or Michael Bevan&rsquo;s final four to beat the Windies. One of those events that makes you ask &lsquo;Where were you when...&rsquo; It was crazy to think that I now had one of these, a moment when Australia was all on board.&rdquo;

Ending up in hospital after a late-night party in Adelaide was "less than ideal", conceded Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell about the headline-grabbing incident last month, saying his family was affected more than him by the dramatic turns of events.
Maxwell was out drinking and watching a concert by 'Six and Out', the band featuring former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, when he felt unwell and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance last month. He reportedly lost consciousness during the ride.
"I think probably it affected my family a little bit more than it affected me. I knew I had that week off. And obviously, that incident was less than ideal, and the timing," Maxwell was quoted as saying by the 'Australian Associated Press'.
"But I had that week (during which the incident took place) off, I knew I had that week off away from the game," he said.
On Sunday, the 35-year-old showed that he remains Australia's most dangerous batter in the shorter formats as he smashed a sensational 120 not out off 55 balls against the West Indies. It was a record-equalling fifth T20I hundred for him.
"...I came back and got back into my running, my gym program and it felt really good and refreshed once I got back. And it's all been focused on getting myself ready for this (T20) series and what's to come," he said.
Cricket Australia (CA) had launched an investigation into the incident and as a result, he was not a part of the preceding ODI series against the West Indies. Later, head coach Andrew McDonald urged the big-hitter "to hold up his end of the bargain" and "take care of himself".
"He needs to obviously have a look at what he's doing at his end and is that the right thing to be doing at that time?" McDonald had stated.
Maxwell said he moved on quickly from the incident in Adelaide.
"I just moved on pretty quickly. I was back in training on Monday so I was pretty good. The coach, Bails, everyone really, they have been outstanding," On his knock on Sunday, Maxwell said he knew a special effort was coming from his bat.
"I woke up this morning and I just had a funny feeling. I don't get it very often, and especially batting middle-order you don't get it often. But I just got a good look at their (West Indies) attack last game in Hobart, and felt like I got a good read of what they were bowling.
"I was disappointed getting out there in the same sort of scenario - short square boundaries with the ground quite similar, and another good wicket. So I felt like I'd missed out again, and I said 'you know what, I can't let this opportunity slip'," he said.
Talking about his life off the field, Maxwell said it is mostly devoted to chilling with his young family.
"...just a lot of family time. I think having that much downtime with the family at the moment, it has just been so good for me away from cricket. And I sort of come to cricket, it is just fun now, I'm able to just go out and just enjoy it," he said.
Maxwell is not new to being in the news for off-field drama.

Australia's cricket board said it is "seeking further information" on Glenn Maxwell's hospitalisation last week, media reports say.

Cricket Australia (CA) has launched an investigation into an incident involving flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who had to be rushed to a hospital following a late-night party in Adelaide last week.
According to Daily Telegraph, Maxwell was out drinking and watching a concert by 'Six and Out', the band featuring former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, when he felt unwell.
CA said it is aware of the incident involving the all-rounder who played a key role in Australia's triumphant World Cup campaign in India last October-November.
"Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide at the weekend and is seeking further information," a statement by CA said, according to 'ESPNcricinfo'.
Maxwell, who last week stepped down as captain of BBL side Melbourne Stars after failing to make the finals, was not named in the 13-man squad to face the West Indies in a three-match ODI series from February 2 and 6.
"It is not related to him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision that was made following the BBL and based on his individual management plan. Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series. No further comment will be made at this time," CA said.
He was, however, discharged from the hospital after a short stay and is back to training.

A run-chase of 223 looked very tough and with Australia reduced to 68/3, India seemed on course to seal the 5-match T20I series with 2 games left.
But entered Glenn Maxwell and ran riot.
He went into beast mode and single-handedly carried his side over the finish line with an unbeaten 48-ball-104.

And once we... once we stayed at the same end for a couple of overs, I felt like I was starting to get a little bit of movement back. But that actually probably made the whole job a little bit more simple. I wasn't sort of overthinking the situation. I just knew if I've got a ball that I could hit or try and hit it."

"That's a good question. I think when Patty (Pat Cummins) was, Patty was pretty calm. I think when it got to about maybe 60 or 70 (runs), I thought to two more, maybe half-decent overs, around 15., it's right in the balance here. We knew that. I knew Rasheed had about 18 balls left and that it is going to happen in the last 13 overs or something like that. So as long as we sort of kept him out of the game, I felt like I could...I could hit boundaries off the others. So I was sort of more about negating him, not letting him have a shot at the rest of the tail. And because he's obviously world-class, it can hit you in the pad, he can beat you on both sides of the bat. So I just felt like if we could negate him and keep him out of the back end of the game, we'd be alright."

"It's been a busy couple of weeks, all since my family arrived. So it's...yeah, it's been a weird couple of weeks, but yeah, extremely grateful, I suppose, to be able to get back out here and make the semis. I think after the first two games, we were pretty close to being written off for most people and to being able to string six wins together at the right time...and we didn't have our best stuff tonight, against a pretty spirited opposition. "Yeah, not great. I've got to be honest, sitting in the changing room and I didn't want to bat. It was a bit different to the last game where I was way too eager to get out there. And then we talked about over-arousal levels and I probably reached double maximum, if you couldn't tell. But yeah, I was a bit more chilled when I got out there. Didn't have too many high hopes I think. Pretty crook the last couple of days, coincided with the sleepless night last night with the family over."
On being criticised for his lean returns in recent times
"I'm not too worried about people saying I haven't made runs in ODI cricket because it doesn't really matter, especially with my role in one-day cricket, it's very similar to T20. So I just draw on those experiences, knowing that if I do get it right on the day, hopefully, my team will be winning. Having had a bit of success this year in India during the IPL, I come to India during this World Cup full of confidence."
If he paid any attention to records and the scoreboard during his innings
"I'm very aware of them! I'm very aware of balls faced. I love the fastest 50, fastest 100 records, I think they're pretty cool records, sometimes to the detriment of myself. I've always probably pushed the boundaries a bit too much. I think against Afghanistan in 2015, I was 88 off 37 (balls) and I was like 'I'm getting it (century) in the next two balls.' Hit one straight to cover and butchered it but I think I got the fastest hundred next game. So I've been in those positions before where I make fast hundreds when I get on a run. I know I'm difficult to bowl to, it's just about getting past the first ball."

Australia saved their best for the last as Indian middle-order wilted under pressure exerted by part-time off-spin of Glenn Maxwell, losing the third ODI by 66 runs here on Wednesday.
India however won the series 2-1.
India were cruising along at 171 for 2 chasing a stiff target of 353 on a placid track but the middle-order crumbled in chase with Maxwell (4/40) getting crucial breakthroughs to restrict the hosts to 286 in 49.4 overs.
Skipper Rohit Sharma (81) and Kohli struck fifties to provide the middle-order with a perfect platform in the big chase, but the rest floundered to hand Australia the advantage.
Earlier, Mitchell Marsh (96) headlined Australia's best batting show with David Warner, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne helping themselves to attacking half-centuries during a commanding performance to break a five-ODI losing streak.
The two teams will now play a couple of warm-up games before meeting again in 10 days' time for the tournament-opener in Chennai on October 8.
While Marsh missed reaching triple figure by a whisker, Australia's batters came good collectively in what was their last official ODI before the start of the World Cup.
Warner had himself to blame for his dismissal after a fiery 56 off 34 balls (6x4s, 4x6s), but he set the tone for Australia early on.
Smith also put brakes on his poor run of scores to make a rapid 74 and towards the end, Labuschagne upped the ante with his 58-ball knock to help Australia post their challenging score.
Labuschagne also became Australia's top run-getter in the ongoing calendar year.
During the chase, Rohit clobbered six sixes and five fours to race to 81 from 57 balls and recorded his ninth fifty against Australia and 53rd overall, while Kohli, who looked good for his 48th ODI ton had to settle for 66th half-century.
The two batters put on 70 for the second wicket and took India close to the 150-run mark by the 21st over, but after Rohit and Kohli were dismissed, the others fumbled collectively.
Maxwell accounted for Washington Sundar (18) and then held onto a stunning reflex catch of Rohit, had Kohli mistime a pull-shot and fooled Shreyas Iyer (48) with a beauty to mark an impressive return after a six-month long injury layoff.
Josh Hazlewood took 2/42 and Cameron Green claimed 2/30 to provide ideal support for Maxwell.
Rohit began with two spectacular sixes off Mitchell Starc over cover and pulled Pat Cummins twice over midwicket with command to provide early impetus.
The India captain, coming off a two-game break, hit the straps immediately which also made up for the dot balls his first-wicket partner Washington Sundar consumed.
The makeshift opener Washington Sundar pulled Hazlewood for his first four and smacked Cummins for a six &mdash; reminiscent of his famous six from the 2020-21 Australia tour &mdash; but perished for 18 off 30 balls.
Rohit and Kohli went about their jobs unchallenged for the better part of their stand, but their association came to an abrupt end in the 21st over when Maxwell, taking an evasive action on a powerful shot from the India skipper, ended up catching the ball one-handed.
Maxwell continued to make inroads as this time he got the key wicket of Kohli, who, looking to clear Steve Smith at midwicket, got a top edge, which was collected by the fielder running behind.
Despite a set platform to take the mantle, India&rsquo;s middle-order stuttered which allowed Australia to grab control.
KL Rahul added 52 runs with Iyer for the fourth wicket but fell to Starc after a 30-ball 26 and Suryakumar Yadav (8) pulled one short from Hazlewood to Maxwell.
Maxwell then cleaned up Iyer for a 43-ball 48 (1x4s, 2x6s) and Hazlewood had Kuldeep Yadav chop one onto his wickets.
Ravindra Jadeja scored 35 from 36 balls (3x4s, 1x6s) but had no batting partner left to try avoiding the inevitable.

While speaking on the RCB Season 2 Podcast, Maxwell spoke about Warne who died last year due to a cardiac arrest while vacationing in Thailand.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) player termed Warne, who died last year due to a cardiac arrest while vacationing in Thailand, as the most caring and loyal person he had ever come across.
"He is probably the most giving and loyal person that I've probably ever met. Generous not just with what he did with his charity work but generous with his knowledge and time," Maxwell said while speaking on the RCB Season 2 Podcast.
"He actively sought out young spinners during their warm-ups to talk them through different skill sets and trying to help them to be the best version of themselves.
"Everyone felt like they had a connection instantly because that's the way he made you feel, he makes you feel like your best friend straightaway," said Maxwell.
Warne grabbed 708 wickets from 145 Tests and remains the second-highest wicket-taker in the traditional format behind Muttiah Muralitharan.
Warne had also picked up 293 wickets from 194 ODIs, making him only the second bowler in history to go past 1,000 international wickets.
Beyond those monumental stats, Maxwell said Warne cared a lot for him and reached out in a time of need.
"I suppose, post cricket hours, I was so lucky to be able to play some golf with him, chat to him off the field, talk to him on the phone. He cared a lot. Once he saw me before one of the Big Bash games, just walking around. We had a small chat and I sort of&hellip; I wouldn't say I brushed him but I sort of just walked away.
"He messaged me afterwards: 'Are you alright?' And he checked in a couple of times. And then the fourth time I finally opened up. And so I said, this is what's going on. He goes, mate, just take it easy, take a break, do whatever you need to do. I'm always here for you," said Maxwell.
RCB retention made me calm: Maxwell ======================= Maxwell joined the RCB ahead of IPL 2021 and made an instant impact, scoring upwards of 500 runs.
But the Australian said he had flutters before the IPL mega auction in 2022 and a call from RCB Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson calmed his nerves.
` "You never know what's gonna happen because it's a big auction. And like, with how many people they were going to retain and we had, obviously, a couple of bowlers &mdash; Siraj, Harshal, Yuzi (Chahal), then AB (de Villiers), Virat, and those young Indian players, and all could have been retained at some stage.
"So to retain an overseas batter, sometimes isn't the smartest move. It seems straightforward, but in my head, there was obviously a lot more I had to go through and when I got the phone call that I was gonna be retained, I was pumped and couldn't wait to stick around," said Maxwell.
In the IPL 2021, Maxwell made 513 runs from 15 matches with a strike-rate of 144 that included six fifties while averaging 42.75.
In IPL 2022, Maxwell made vital contributions in RCB's play-offs entry, scoring 301 runs from 13 matches with a strike rate 169.

Australia lost nine wickets for 52 runs in their second innings to squander the slight advantage they had at the start of day three.
"I think they&rsquo;ve showed a lot of fight. Bar that one session I thought they were outstanding. It&rsquo;s bloody difficult over there - it&rsquo;s not an easy place to play, it&rsquo;s so foreign for us.
"But I feel like, apart from a couple of little moments, we&rsquo;ve been in the fight, we&rsquo;ve been matching India at different times and they&rsquo;ve shown a lot of fight," he was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Among the current lot, Maxwell is the only one to have scored a Test century in India alongside Steve Smith.
