Delhi's new Centre of Excellence in Diabetes aims to blend yoga and lifestyle changes into treatment. Targeted at underprivileged sectors, this Rs 17 crore initiative awaits Cabinet nod, promising enhanced healthcare delivery at GTB Hospital.

Delhi aims to establish a Center of Excellence in Diabetes and Endocrinology, integrating yoga and lifestyle changes into treatment.

The Delhi government is planning to set up a specialised Centre of Excellence in Diabetes and Endocrinology to promote yoga, lifestyle changes, and dietary modifications in managing diabetes and to conduct research on the lifestyle disease, officials said.
The proposed centre will be an autonomous institute offering specialised care for economically weaker sections and will extend the existing Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (DEM) at the Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) hospital, they said.
The project, with a financial implication of Rs 17 crore, has already been recommended by a committee constituted by the Department of Health and Family Welfare and is currently awaiting Cabinet approval.
An official said the new centre will provide advanced care to patients suffering from diabetes and endocrine disorders.
"Diabetes affects even young individuals, with lifestyle factors like obesity, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy eating habits contributing to the disease,&rdquo; he said.
The centre will focus on promoting yoga, lifestyle changes, and healthy dietary habits as part of treatment strategies for diabetes, he added.
He further said that once approved, the facility will be the first of its kind in the government sector across the country, offering state-of-the-art treatment and referral services to underprivileged patients.
A proposal prepared by the health department will be presented to the chief minister for approval.
&ldquo;Creation of an institute of excellence in this field will add substantial value to the healthcare services provided by the Delhi government through its hospitals by offering world-class referral services in a critically important area,&rdquo; the proposal reads.
The DEM Centre, established in 2013 as a project under the 11th Five Year Plan, operates from a dedicated four-and-a-half-storey building on the GTB Hospital campus.
It was envisioned as a referral superspecialty centre providing advanced care, diagnostic services, research, and training in endocrinology. There were also plans to initiate super-specialty programmes (DM-level courses).
However, the pace of development of the centre has been slow and many of the original objectives remain unfulfilled, the official noted.

A new study states that the number of diabetic patients in the country have increased drastically since the year 2019. In this study done by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) published in the UK medical journal Lancet,&nbsp;it was found that among all states and Union Territories in India, Goa has the highest number of diabetic patients followed by Puducherry and Kerala.&nbsp;

In Goa 26.4% people are diabetic, while Puducherry has 26.3% diabetes patients and Kerala stands in the third position with 25.5% population living with diabetes. The number of people with diabetes in these states is much higher, as compared to the national average of 11.4%. The study also revealed that at least 136 million people, or 15.3% of the population, have prediabetes.
The study also says that India now has over 101 million people with diabetes, as compared to 70 million in the year 2019. Though the numbers are stabilizing in some developed states, they are increasing at an alarming rate in some.&nbsp;
The study has also warned that diabetes cases may increase in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh in the next few years.&nbsp;

According to research published in the journal Diabetes Care, people with the highest potato consumption have a 9% increased risk of developing&nbsp;Type 2 diabetes.&nbsp;
For the study, team analysed dietary patterns of 54,000 participants aged 50-64 for 12 months. They found that people who consumed boiled potatoes had a 21% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who ate fried or mashed potatoes.&nbsp;
The way potatoes are prepared plays a major role when it comes to diabetes, researchers concluded.&nbsp;

There was a 3-year follow-up period for this study and it was found that 22.7% of adults who received vitamin D and 25% who received a placebo, relatively had a 15% reduction in the risk.&nbsp;

National drug regulator approves AstraZeneca India to market anti-diabetes drug

The company said Central Drugs Standard Control Organization's approval for its anti diabetes drug Dapagliflozin will help doctors address heart failures at an early stage

Drug firm AstraZeneca India on Tuesday said it has received approval from the country's drug regulator to market anti-diabetes medication Dapagliflozin.
The company said it has received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDCSCO) for the drug indicated for diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Dapagliflozin is the first and only anti-diabetic drug approved to significantly reduce the risk of sustained eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate), cardiovascular deaths and hospitalisations due to heart failure in adults with progressive chronic kidney disease, the drug firm said.
The approval is applicable for both diabetic and non-diabetic CKD patients, it added.
CKD is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation globally and in India, representing a significant clinical and economic burden.
"The timely approval of Dapagliflozin from the CDCSCO committee with the additional indication is a huge boost for nephrologists across the country towards the management of progressive CKD," AstraZeneca India Vice President - Medical Affairs and Regulatory Anil Kukreja said in a statement.
The approval will provide the clinical community with a potential therapeutic option to arrest the progression of CKDs and address heart failures at an early stage, he added.
