The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) warns about the alarming speed in which cases of diabetes are rising in India. 

Goa surpasses in number of diabetic patients; ICMR warns other states too

Diabetes is one of the most common health conditions caused mostly due to lifestyle disorders. However there can be many factors that can cause diabetes. India is one of the countries in the world with highest number of people suffering from this chronic disease.

A new study states that the number of diabetic patients in the country have increased drastically since the year 2019. In this study done by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) published in the UK medical journal Lancet, it was found that among all states and Union Territories in India, Goa has the highest number of diabetic patients followed by Puducherry and Kerala.

In Goa 26.4% people are diabetic, while Puducherry has 26.3% diabetes patients and Kerala stands in the third position with 25.5% population living with diabetes. The number of people with diabetes in these states is much higher, as compared to the national average of 11.4%. The study also revealed that at least 136 million people, or 15.3% of the population, have prediabetes.

The study also says that India now has over 101 million people with diabetes, as compared to 70 million in the year 2019. Though the numbers are stabilizing in some developed states, they are increasing at an alarming rate in some.

The study has also warned that diabetes cases may increase in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh in the next few years.
