S A Basha, the mastermind of the 1998 serial bomb blasts that rocked Coimbatore, died due to age-related ailments at a private hospital here, police said on Tuesday.
He died on December 16 evening.
Police force has been deployed in the city in view of the proposed funeral procession of Basha on Tuesday evening, an official said.
&ldquo;He was on parole and not keeping well of late. He was admitted to a private hospital as his health deteriorated and died on Monday evening after being in prison for 35 years,&rdquo; said Indian National League party leader J Rahim.
Basha, 84, and 16 others from Al-Umma had been serving life imprisonment in connection with the 1998 blasts. He was granted parole by the Madras High Court recently.
Basha&rsquo;s family members are planning to take out the funeral procession from South Ukkadam to Hyder Ali Tippu Sultan Sunnath Jamaath Masjid at Flower Market, police said, and added sufficient police force has been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.
Basha is the founder-president of the banned outfit Al-Umma and planned the serial bomb blasts that claimed 58 lives on February 14. As many as 231 people were injured in the blasts, police said.
In May 1999, the special investigation team of the Crime Branch CID filed a chargesheet against Basha accusing him of conspiring to kill BJP leader L K Advani using a suicide squad.
Meanwhile, BJP Tamil Nadu vice president Narayanan Thirupathy has urged the police not to allow the funeral procession, as this will set a bad precedent in society if a criminal, terrorist, or murderer is hailed as a martyr.
&ldquo;No doubt anyone thought a cold-blooded murderer should be allowed to have his/her last rights but it should be done peacefully and not with huge honours for which they don&rsquo;t deserve,&rdquo; Thirupathy said in a post on social media platform &lsquo;X&rsquo;.
The fundamentalist thoughts violence, and communal problems started from the 1998 Coimbatore bomb blasts and Basha was the top person responsible for that, he claimed.
Even today, there were hundreds of persons in various political parties and movements who had been members of the banned Al-Umma.
&ldquo;This procession may trigger the forgotten memories of 1998 and it may lead to greater communal issues in future. It is the responsibility of Chief Minister MK Stalin to see to it that this procession does not take place and the last rites of the dead terrorist Basha should be allowed to be performed only with their family members and not with any big crowd,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;

Madras High Court on Friday granted permission to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled roadshow in the Tamil Nadu city of Coimbatore.

The court's order came after the BJP approached the court in response to police denying permission for the saffron party to hold a roadshow citing security risks.
According to local media reports, the police commissioner denied the BJP's request saying that it would cause inconvenience to the public and that the route chosen for the roadshow was allegedly communally sensitive.
The BJP has filed an appeal against this decision in the Madras High Court. Justcice N Anand Venkatesh said he will pass orders by 4.30 pm today.
PM Modi's tour is expected to end at RS Puram, which was one of the locations where the 1998 serial blasts had taken place.
India Today has reported that no political parties or groups have been given permission for roadshows given the communally sensitive nature of Coimbatore.
The officials also said that public exams are scheduled for March 18 and 19, and there are multiple schools located along the proposed route for the roadshow.
Notably, this might have been the first roadshow of PM Modi in Coimbatore. During his visit to Coimbatore in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he addressed only a public meeting at Codissia grounds.
During his recent visit to Tirupur too, he did not hold roadshows. The demand for a roadshow in Coimbatore is believed to have stemmed from the tremendous response to his roadshows in Srirangam and Chennai.

Coimbatore car blast: NIA raids multiple locations across Tamil Nadu

The targets of the searches were said to be some suspects who had connections with a few banned organisations.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the car cylinder explosion in front of a temple here recently, conducted searches at several places in the city and across Tamil Nadu on Thursday.
The searches were carried out by a team that arrived from Chennai and Kochi at over 30 places in the city including Kottaimedu, Ukkadam, Ponvizhanagar and Rathinapuri as part of the state-wide searches at 45 locations, police said.
The city police which investigated the case had seized 75 kg of explosives, documents from Jameesha Mubin, who died in the explosion on October 23 including the drawing of a flag resembling that of ISIS and wordings like those who touched Allah's name will be uprooted.
Police also arrested six associates of Mubin, who had helped him to purchase explosives on e-commerce platform and transport them from his rented house to another house.
The explosion was termed as 'Lone wolf' attack, police said.

A gas cylinder explosion occurred inside a car near a temple in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore on 23 October.

A day after the Tamil Nadu police made 5 arrests in the Coimbatore car blast case, the state government recommended an investigation by the National Investigation Agency. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin on 26 October 2022.
A gas cylinder explosion occurred inside a car near a temple in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore on 23 October. A man named Jemisha Mubeen had been killed in the blast. From his house, police had seized 75 kg of material which can be used to make primitive bombs.
On 25 October, police arrested 5 men, and pressed charges under the stringent UAPA anti-terror act. Cops said that a possible terror angle had not been ruled out.
A day later, the state government said that the decision to recommend an NIA probe was taken due to the possibility of links transcending the borders of the state and the likelihood of international connections emerging.

The investigation into the car blast in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore is expanding, with five persons being arrested, and the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) being invoked.
A terrorism angle has not been ruled out. Police are probing if the man killed in the gas cylinder explosion in the car on 23 October 2022, Jemisha Mubeen had any links with Mohammed Azharuddin, who is an accused in the Easter Sunday bomb blasts in Sri Lanka. The attack in Lanka in 2019 had killed over 250 people.
Further, 75 kg of potassium nitrate, charcoal and aluminium powder have been recovered from Mubeen's house. These chemicals are used in making country bombs, police had said earlier.
Three of the arrested men were seen in CCTV footage carrying two LPG cylinders and two small drums along with Mubeen. The contents have been sent for forensic examination. Another person was arrested for coordination, while one man was arrested for providing the car, as per police.

Tamil Nadu launched an investigation into Sunday's LPG cylinder blast in Coimbatore after it was revealed that the deceased 25-year-old Jameesha Mubin was questioned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 for terror links to the radical group Zahran Hashim, mastermind of the Easter Sunday blasts in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;
Jameesha Mubin was driving the car in wee hours of Sunday with two LPG cylinders and other materials when it exploded. The explosion occurred in front of a temple in Coimbatore.&nbsp;

Babu said that they are looking into every angle because the materials recovered from Mubin's house 'may have been meant for a future plan.'&nbsp;
There is no substantial evidence to support the claim if the expolosion was an attempted attack on the temple, 'Except for the location where it occurred, before the temple, there is no proof to support this claim right now,' a police officer on the case said.&nbsp;
After the explosion, when the police digged into details about Mubin, it raised suspicions due to the location of the explosion. And upon raiding his house, authorities found explosive components including potassium nitrate, aluminium powder, sulphur and charcoal.&nbsp;
The Indian Express reported that according to a source, Mubin was questioned by the NIA in 2019.&nbsp; The report qutoing the source said, 'He was one among the five people we had to examine in 2019 since he had been attending Bayan classes at a Coimbatore mosque of the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ). These classes were closely related to Mohammed Azharudeen, who had direct contact with Zahran Hashim, the mastermind and the leader of the suicide bombers in Easter Sunday blasts in Sri Lanka.'&nbsp;
Azharudeen was held for multiple charges after the Easter Sunday blasts for his alleged role in recruiting youth from Kerala and Tamil Nadu.&nbsp; He reportedly also played a significant role in the Islamic State group's Tamil Nadu unit.&nbsp;
CCTV footage accessed by The Indian Express from a building near Mubin's house showed four men, reportedly Mubin too, lugging a large object out of his home.&nbsp;
The video is from around 11:25 PM. While the police are searching for the remaining three seen in the video, investigators believe that the huge object brought out of the house wrapped in white was one of the cylinders that exploded.&nbsp;
Mubin's body recovered from the explosion site was unrecognisable with one of the cylinders weighing 35 KGs in the car that remained unexploded.
The IE report further said according to an investigator with the Tamil Nadu Police, that except for the NIA investigation, Mubin has never had a case filed against him.&nbsp;
&ldquo;After the explosion, we gathered CCTV footage to identify the car&rsquo;s origin, which led to his home and the confiscation of things including black powder, potassium nitrate, and matchboxes. Although Mubin was married, he and his wife, deaf and dumb, lived apart. Seven people who had contact with Mubin in the recent days by phone and in person are being questioned now,&rdquo; added the investigator.
TN police is treading carefully when attributing a terror plot to the case with six teams working to find additional information about Mubin, including people he met, locations he visited and social media movement.&nbsp;
The case is now political too after BJP state President K Annamalai tweeted that the Coimbatore cylinder blast is no longer a 'cylinder blast'.&nbsp;
He questioned the Chief Minister MK Stalin, accusing the government of failure after a 'clear cut terror act with ISIS links'.&nbsp;

When asked about the allegations by the female officer in her FIR, the Air Chief Marshal stated that the &lsquo;IAF law is very strict&rsquo; for any such incident. He also mentioned that the two-finger test conducted on a woman officer is misreported.

A woman Indian Air Force (IAF) officer who accused her colleague of rape has claimed that she was subject to the &ldquo;two-finger test&rdquo;, which is a preliminary, unscientific examination of rape victims to ascertain sexual abuse, by medical officers at the academy.
She further said the some of the officers intimidated her and forced her to withdraw the complaint. 
An officer of the Indian Air Force College was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a colleague at the Indian Air Force College in Redfields, Coimbatore.
Reports said that the alleged sexual assault took place ten days ago and the woman had complained to the IAF authorities who allegedly did not take any action.
The woman officer then filed a complaint with the Coimbatore Police stating that she was not satisfied with the enquiry done by the IAF authorities.
Following the investigation, the accused officer, Flight Lieutenant Amrinder, was made to surrender and been sent to judicial custody and is currently lodged at Udumalpet jail.
In a statement, the Air Force said: "The IAF is cooperating with the police investigation and is also conducting an internal inquiry. We cannot comment any further as the matter is subjudice."

She has further alleged that&nbsp;some of the officers intimidated her and forced her to withdraw the complaint.
An officer of the Indian Air Force College was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a colleague at the Indian Air Force College in Redfields, Coimbatore.
Reports said that the alleged sexual assault took place on September 9 and the woman had complained to the IAF authorities who allegedly did not take any action.
The woman officer then filed a complaint with the Coimbatore Police stating that she was not satisfied with the enquiry done by the IAF authorities.
Following the investigation, the accused officer, Flight Lieutenant Amrinder, was made to surrender and been sent to judicial custody and is currently lodged at Udumalpet jail.
In a statement, the Air Force said: "The IAF is cooperating with the police investigation and is also conducting an internal inquiry. We cannot comment any further as the matter is subjudice."
