Coimbatore car blast: Tamil Nadu govt recommends NIA probe day after police invoked UAPA anti-terror law

A day after the Tamil Nadu police made 5 arrests in the Coimbatore car blast case, the state government recommended an investigation by the National Investigation Agency. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin on 26 October 2022.

A gas cylinder explosion occurred inside a car near a temple in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore on 23 October. A man named Jemisha Mubeen had been killed in the blast. From his house, police had seized 75 kg of material which can be used to make primitive bombs.

On 25 October, police arrested 5 men, and pressed charges under the stringent UAPA anti-terror act. Cops said that a possible terror angle had not been ruled out.

A day later, the state government said that the decision to recommend an NIA probe was taken due to the possibility of links transcending the borders of the state and the likelihood of international connections emerging.
