World Athletics on Wednesday introduced prize money for Olympic gold medallists at Paris 2024 and all medallists from Los Angeles Olympic in 2028.

The governing body stated that a&nbsp;total prize pot of US$2.4 million has been ring fenced from the International Olympic Committee&rsquo;s revenue share allocation

World Athletics on Wednesday introduced prize money for Olympic gold medallists at Paris 2024 and all medallists from Los Angeles Olympic in 2028.
With that, World Athletics became the first international federation to award prize money at an Olympic Games.
The governing body stated that a&nbsp;total prize pot of US$2.4 million has been ring fenced from the International Olympic Committee&rsquo;s revenue share allocation, which is received by World Athletics every four years. This will be used to reward athletes who win a gold medal in each of the 48 athletics events in Paris with US$50,000.
This initiative by World Athletics also includes a firm commitment to extend the prize money at a tiered level, to Olympic silver and bronze medal winners at the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
When sharing details of the decision, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe commented: "The introduction of prize money for Olympic gold medallists is a pivotal moment for World Athletics and the sport of athletics as a whole, underscoring our commitment to empowering the athletes and recognising the critical role they play in the success of any Olympic Games.
&nbsp;&ldquo;This is the continuation of a journey we started back in 2015, which sees all the money World Athletics receives from the International Olympic Committee for the Olympic Games go directly back into our sport.
&nbsp;&ldquo;We started with the Olympic dividend payments to our Member Federations, which saw us distribute an extra US$5m a year on top of existing grants aimed at athletics growth projects, and we are now in a position to also fund gold medal performances for athletes in Paris, with a commitment to reward all three medallists at the LA28 Olympic Games.
&nbsp;&ldquo;While it is impossible to put a marketable value on winning an Olympic medal, or on the commitment and focus it takes to even represent your country at an Olympic Games, I think it is important we start somewhere and make sure some of the revenues generated by our athletes at the Olympic Games are directly returned to those who make the Games the global spectacle that it is.&rdquo;

Anju, who won a bronze medal in the women's long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris, also spoke about women empowerment and how the country now also celebrates athletes' accomplishments.

Speaking at a programme organised at the PM's residence on Christmas, the legendary long jumper said: "As a sportsperson, I was here for almost 25 years and I'm seeing a lot of changes. When I got India's first global medal 20 years ago, even my department was not ready to give me a promotion.
"But after Neeraj (Chopra) got a medal, I have seen the changes&hellip; the way we are celebrating... I envy them because I was in the wrong era," Anju said during the event.
She praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's eagerness to promote and transform sports in the country.
Anju, who won a bronze medal in the women's long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris, also spoke about women empowerment and how the country now also celebrates athletes' accomplishments.
"Women empowerment is not just a word now. Every Indian girl is ready to dream and they know their dreams will come true," she said.
The PM interacted with the Christian community on the occasion of Christmas, and Anju was among the prominent persons who attended the event.
"I think in the near future, we will be at the top (of sports world)," she said.
Among her other achievements, Anju bagged a gold medal at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games and achieved her personal best of 6.83m at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, which brought her the fifth position.
She was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2002, Khel Ratna in 2003 and the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award, in 2004.

Manikanta, who was representing Services, clocked 10.23 seconds at the National Open Athletics Championships.

The 40-year-old Punia won a gold in the 2014 Asian Games and then added a bronze in 2018. She has also won three silver and one bronze in the Commonwealth Games in her over 20-year international career.
In the women's heptathlon, Nandini Agasara took the bronze ahead of 2018 gold medallist Swapna Barman after winning the 800m race, the last of the gruelling seven-event competition.
Nandini collected an aggregate of 5712 points while Barman, who finished third in 800m, secured 5708. China's Zheng Ninali won the gold with an aggregate of 6149 points while Voronina Ekaterina of Uzbekistan was second with 6056.

The 23-year-old clocked her victory at 12.82 seconds and with the wind gauge showing the permissible wind limit as well, it was confirmed that Jyothi broke her own national record at the event too. Her attempt of 12.79 seconds in Gandhinagar was not considered to be a national record as it was supported by the wind which was not under the permissible limit.
In matching the 13.18 seconds meet mark in the heats itself, she bettered the earlier record of 13.38 seconds set by Anuradha Biswal in Chennai. A record that had been there for 20 years at the Championships.
After coming out as a comfortable winner in the final, she is now the second-fastest Asian in the event this year and earned a place just outside the continent's All-time top 10 list as well.

The athlete's ban will be effective from March 29, 2022 according to an Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) statement. She had been provisionally suspended for using the substance back in May this year.
The 26-year-old finished sixth at the Tokyo Olympics and is the only Indian woman to cross the 65-metre mark in Discus throw.
Kamalpreet's ban comes only days after javelin thrower Shivpal Singh was handed a four-year ban following a failed dope test that took place last year.
"On 28 March 2022, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland reported an Adverse Analytical Finding in the Sample for the presence of Stanozolol metabolites,&rdquo; AIU said in their statement.

Indian Olympian sprinter Dutee Chand revealed on Sunday that she had faced ragging by her seniors during her stay at a state-run sports hostel in Bhuvneshwar.
The Orissa-born sprinter recalled the incident on social media a day after a college student committed suicide after a round of ragging on Saturday.
Recounting the incident from 2006-07 at the sports hostel, the 26-year-old alleged her seniors claiming that seniors at Sports Hostel, Bhuvneshwar used to force her to massage their bodies and wash their clothes.
The Asian Games silver medalist further revealed that the seniors also made comments on her finances about which she made complaints to the hostel in charge but she never got their attention. "It used to take a mental toll on me. I was helpless at that time," said the 100-metre National champion. 
The authorities of the Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar are yet to give a response to the Dutee's charges.

Dutee is a part of the Indian relay team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, starting July 28.

While participating in the inaugural edition of the National Open Masters Athletics Championships, the grand old lady clinched a golden double in sprints, completing the 100-meter race in 45.40 seconds and the 200-meter sprint in 1 minute, 52.17 seconds.
"It's a great feeling and I want to race again," Rambai told the Times of India.
She broke the 5-year-old national record created by Man Kaur, who completed the 100-meter race in 74 seconds. Kaur was 101 years old then.

The 105-year-old lady further revealed that she wanted to run at a younger age but no one gave her a chance. She started racing at the age of 104.
Rambai was born on January 1, 1917, and now she wanted to take part in international tournaments.

The decision was taken after a group comprising of medical, legal and sports figures presented a report on the same. As per the new 24-page policy, an athlete is eligible to participate in a women's event who experienced any part of male puberty before the age of 12. While currently there are no transgender women athletes participating in elite swimming competitions, these new policies will open the door for those who have never experienced male puberty (androgen insensitivity) and those females who have had suppressed male puberty before the age of 12.
