Jyothi Yarraji smashes national record in 100m Hurdles at the National Open Athletics Championship

Indian hurdler Jyothi Yarraji made history as she became the only Indian woman to finish the 100m hurdles race in under 13 seconds at the National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru.

The 23-year-old clocked her victory at 12.82 seconds and with the wind gauge showing the permissible wind limit as well, it was confirmed that Jyothi broke her own national record at the event too. Her attempt of 12.79 seconds in Gandhinagar was not considered to be a national record as it was supported by the wind which was not under the permissible limit.

In matching the 13.18 seconds meet mark in the heats itself, she bettered the earlier record of 13.38 seconds set by Anuradha Biswal in Chennai. A record that had been there for 20 years at the Championships.

After coming out as a comfortable winner in the final, she is now the second-fastest Asian in the event this year and earned a place just outside the continent's All-time top 10 list as well.
