WhatsApp unveils design refresh with focus on usability and aesthetics

The latest design update for WhatsApp is a combination of a refreshed colour scheme, revamped icons and animations, and improved navigation features.

WhatsApp unveils design refresh with focus on usability and aesthetics

WhatsApp is rolling out a significant design update across its Android and iOS applications.

This update prioritises user experience with a focus on improved readability, streamlined navigation, and a more modern aesthetic.

Enhanced colour scheme

The most prominent change involves a revised colour palette. The previous blue and green mix is replaced with a consistent green theme.

According to Meta, this approach fosters a more unified user experience and aligns with WhatsApp's brand identity.

Additionally, the update incorporates darker tones, resulting in a "Dark Mode" with higher contrast and deeper colors to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. Selective use of neutral colors throughout the app further enhances readability.

Refreshed elements

WhatsApp's iconography and illustrations have been redesigned to reflect the updated colour scheme and create a more cohesive visual language.

Additionally, the app now features new animations that introduce a touch of playfulness to user interactions. The default chat background has also been revamped with fresh doodles, adding a subtle touch of personality.

Improved navigation

The Android version of WhatsApp benefits significantly from the introduction of a new bottom navigation bar.

This layout positions key functions like Chats, Status, Calls, and Communities closer to the user's thumb, facilitating one-handed navigation and enhancing overall usability.

For iPhone users, the update streamlines the process of attaching and sharing media such as pictures and videos.

The previous full-screen menu is replaced with an expandable tray. This new layout allows users to see available options for sending media, polls, documents, and other content more clearly.
