Apple's Big Shift: iPhones to permit sideloading apps in 2024; Check full details

In compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple will introduce app sideloading on iPhones by 2024. This move, a first for Apple, addresses regulatory demands but raises concerns over security and potential revenue loss.

Apple's Big Shift: iPhones to permit sideloading apps in 2024; Check full details

Apple is on the brink of significant changes driven by new regulations in the European Union (EU).

For the first time, the company will permit iPhone users to sideload apps on their devices starting in 2024, a shift brought about by EU mandates. Let's delve deeper into what this development means for you.

What's Changing for iPhones?

Before, if you had an iPhone, you could only download apps from Apple's App Store. But soon, you'll be able to download apps from other places too. This is a big deal because it's never been allowed before on iPhones.

You might have heard of something called "installing APKs on the iPhone." APKs are usually for Android phones, not iPhones. But here, it just means you can get apps from outside the App Store. This change is supposed to happen with the iOS 17.2 update in 2024.

Why is Apple Making this Change?

The EU made a law called the Digital Markets Act. It says big tech companies like Apple have to let people download apps from different places, not just their own app stores. Apple didn't really want to do this, but if they don't, they could get in big trouble and lose a lot of money.

Why Didn't Apple Want to Change?

Apple was worried about two things: safety and money. They always said that iPhones are safe because they control all the apps you can get. They're also worried about losing money.

They charge app makers a fee, called the Apple Tax, for every purchase you make in their App Store. If you start getting apps from other places, Apple won't get this fee.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you use an iPhone and live in the European Union, this is exciting news! You'll have more choices for apps. But it's also a bit risky because apps from other places might not be as safe as the ones from the App Store.

And for app makers, wile they might make more money without the Apple Tax, they also have to be careful about people pirating their apps.

Wrap Up

This change is a big deal for Apple and iPhone users. It could change how we use our phones and what apps we can get. Everyone's watching to see how Apple will handle these new rules and what it means for the future of the App Store and iPhones.
