Instagram to restrict sensitive content for new teen users by default

Instagram, the photo and video sharing network owned by Meta, has stated it will restrict sensitive content for new teen users by default.

In Sensitive Content Control, "Standard" is the default setting, which restricts access to sensitive content and accounts. "More" allows users to view more sensitive content and accounts, whilst "Less" reduces the amount of this content displayed relative to the default setting. The "More" option is inaccessible to individuals under the age of 18.

Instagram stated that minors had only two options for Sensitive Content Control: Standard and Less.

New teens on Instagram under the age of 16 will be placed in the Less state by default. For teens who are already on Instagram, the platform will send a notification inviting them to choose the Less experience.

In Search, Explore, Hashtag Pages, Reels, Feed Recommendations, and Suggested Profiles, this will make it more difficult for young users to encounter potentially sensitive information or accounts.

In addition, Instagram is experimenting with a new method to persuade adolescents to update their security and privacy settings. It will display prompts requesting that kids examine their settings, such as who can reshare their material, who can message and contact them, what content they can see, and how to manage their time on the platform.
