Indian Government prioritises responsible AI practices over regulation

As per media reports, in a written submission to Lok Sabha, IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Indian government has no intention of regulating the growth of artificial intelligence in the country. Instead, they are working to standardise responsible AI practices. Vaishnaw acknowledged ethical concerns and risks surrounding AI including bias and privacy violations. The government is focusing on using AI to provide personalised services to citizens through digital public platforms. The Ministry of Electronics and IT has initiated a proof-of-concept project called AIRAWAT which will provide a common computing platform for AI research and knowledge assimilation. The National Informatics Centre has also set up a Centre of Excellence in AI to facilitate AI as a service through the Meghraj Cloud.
