ChatGPT parent OpenAI set to launch AI-powered search engine next week to compete with Google: Report

OpenAI is gearing up to launch its own search engine, powered by AI. Positioned as a direct competitor to Google, it builds on ChatGPT's abilities to integrate real-time web data, along with visual aids.

ChatGPT parent OpenAI set to launch AI-powered search engine next week to compete with Google: Report

OpenAI is reportedly set to unveil its AI-powered search engine on Monday. This launch positions OpenAI as a direct Google Search competitor. Here’s more on the latest news on this new product from ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

OpenAI Search Engine- Launch

According to Reuters, the timing of OpenAI’s announcement is strategic, set on May 13, a day before Google's annual I/O conference, potentially placing OpenAI’s unveiling in the spotlight.

OpenAI Search Engine- What is it?

The information comes via Reuters who’ve reported according to “two sources familiar with the matter. Additionally, Bloomberg and Information too had hinted at the same in their earlier reports.

According to the latest report, the search product from OpenAI is designed to augment the functionalities of its existing ChatGPT service. This enhancement will permit ChatGPT to procure and integrate real-time data from the internet, inclusive of citations, as highlighted in reports by Bloomberg and Reuters. The integration of visual aids and diagrams to supplement textual responses in the new search product is also expected.

The new search product extends OpenAI’s flagship ChatGPT product, enhancing its utility by enabling access to direct web content.

OpenAI Search Engine- Context and Implications

Since its debut, ChatGPT has reached 100 million monthly active users rapidly, a milestone reported by Reuters. Despite this, the traffic to ChatGPT’s website has seen fluctuations and is only now stabilizing around its May 2023 peak levels as per analytics by Similarweb.

An earlier attempt to provide updated web information via ChatGPT plugins was phased out in April, as documented in an OpenAI help center posting reported by Reuters. This initiative highlights the ongoing challenge of integrating accurate and timely web data into artificial intelligence applications.

OpenAI is now at the forefront of integrating comprehensive web search capabilities into AI chat functionalities, a move that could redefine user interactions with digital information platforms.

The introduction of OpenAI's search product is anticipated to impact the generative AI landscape significantly. Besides challenging Google, OpenAI’s AI-powered search engine is set to rival Perplexity, another AI search venture with a $1 billion valuation. Reuters notes that Perplexity, initiated by a former OpenAI researcher, offers an AI-native search interface that incorporates citations in both text and image responses.
