Apple launches AirTag detector app to protect Android users’ privacy

Apple has launched a new app for Android. Called AirTag detector, the app will let users scan nearby AirTags. The app is purportedly meant to boost Android users’ privacy.

According to Apple, the app enables Android users to scan for nearby AirTags that are no longer with their owner. AirTags that are travelling with the owner will not be detected, while any AirTags that are considered ‘lost’ will be. If any ‘lost’ AirTag has been travelling with the app user for more than 10 minutes, the app can help locate it by playing a sound, and providing instructions on how to disable the AirTag.

Apple said that they are ‘raising the bar on privacy’ for their users and the industry, and hope that others follow.

The app is meant to combat stalking or non-consensual tracking by way of AirTags. Until now, an Android user had no way of knowing if someone had dropped an AirTag in their bag or pocket, and was using it to track their location. The app makes this more difficult, although the protection does rely on Android users downloading and using this app.

Apple AirTag specs

Apple launched the AirTag at its Spring Loaded event, earlier this year. AirTags use Ultra Wideband technology that can let compatible iPhones navigate to them, using a built-in speaker. The AirTag also gets an IP67 dust and water resistance rating, and a user-replaceable coin cell battery that Apple claims can last over a year. Compatible with Siri, the AirTag costs ₹3,190 for a single unit, or ₹10,900 for a pack of 4.
