Facebook reveals reason behind FB, WhatsApp, Instagram outage

Facebook has spoken up about the nearly six-hour downtime of its services, during which 3.5 billion users were unable to access Instagram, WhatsApp, or the Facebook website.

In a blog post, the company said that a faulty configuration change on the backbone routers interrupted communication among data centres, bringing services to a halt.

Several Facebook employees told Reuters that the failure of tools they use to communicate with their colleagues compounded the problem. The blog post also clarified that no user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.

Facebook also apologised to users for the inconvenience caused, and said that they will work to make their infrastructure more resilient.
