In an exclusive conversation with Editorji's Vikram Chandra, India's newest pace prodigy Mayank Yadav opened up about a range of subjects, from his beginnings in cricket to the possibility of breaking Shoaib Akhtar's record for the world's fastest delivery.

Mayank Yadav, the 21-year-old fast bowler for the Lucknow Super Giants, has rapidly become a household name in the IPL 2024, thanks to his blistering pace and remarkable skill. The young talent from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has made a significant impact right from his debut, achieving the unprecedented feat of securing the Player of the Match awards in his initial two games. This accomplishment has placed him in the spotlight, making him the first player in IPL's storied history to receive such distinction early in his career.

Throughout these matches, Yadav has showcased an extraordinary ability to deliver fast balls, clocking speeds between 150-155 kph, and claiming six wickets against some of the game's most formidable batters, including Jonny Bairstow and Glenn Maxwell. His stellar performance has ignited discussions about his potential inclusion in India's squad for the T20 World Cup, given his precise control over line and length at such impressive speeds.

In an exclusive conversation with Vikram Chandra from Editorji, Yadav opened up about various aspects of his life and career. He shared insights into his journey in cricket, and his technique for bowling fast, and even discussed the possibility of breaking Shoaib Akhtar's record for the fastest ball in cricket history.

"I think it's my natural ability that I can bowl this fast. It's also my hard work. There's only so much you can do with natural ability, but you need to hone your skill and produce the goods with hard work," Yadav explained, revealing the secret behind his rapid deliveries. With time, he believes his speed has only increased, suggesting a bright future ahead in his career.

Yadav also shared his emotional response to winning back-to-back Player of the Match awards, emphasizing his team-oriented mindset and his surprise at such early success. His cricketing journey began at the tender age of 9 in the humble settings of a local park, evolving significantly when he joined the renowned Sonnet Cricket Club in Delhi. Under the guidance of renowned coach Tarak Sinha, Yadav refined his skills, eventually making his way into professional cricket.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted his early career, Yadav's talent did not go unnoticed. The Lucknow Super Giants picked him even before he had played a single T20 match, showing immense faith in his abilities. Throughout, he received considerable support from the franchise, especially from RPSG group chairman Dr. Sanjiv Goenka, who ensured Yadav had everything he needed to succeed, particularly during times of injury. He said, "I suffered 2-3 injuries. I never had to ask for anything. They always were there to cater for what I needed, always helping me out."

Looking ahead, Yadav expressed his aspirations to represent India on the international stage, with a specific focus on Test cricket. "I want to play Test cricket. I will play T20s too, but I want to play Test cricket for India. My focus will be on playing red-ball cricket for the country," he stated, underscoring his ambition to don the national colors and contribute to India's cricketing legacy.
