Ukraine War: UEFA bans Russian football clubs from playing in all competitions

UEFA, the governing body of European football has banned Russia and all related clubs from participating in any competition. The decision from UEFA came on Monday as the football teams were kicked out of the Women's European Championship, the Men's Champions League and the 2023 Women's World Cup qualification.

The sporting sanctions were imposed following Russia's war on Ukraine as FIFA the world governing body of the sport has already suspended the national team from playing any competitive or friendly fixtures.

UEFA on Monday confirmed that Portugal will take Russia's place in the Women's Euro 2022 in July. Also, Russian Premier League Champions Zenit St Petersburg will not be allowed to compete in the Champions League next season which is set to cost the Russian club tens of millions of euros. Zenit St Petersburg is owned by Russian state energy firm Gazprom and the company's contract has also been terminated as the main sponsor of the Champions League.
