Rachin Ravindra, the New Zealand all-rounder put up a sensational show for the Black Caps in their World Cup opener against England in Ahmedabad. He stole the spotlight with an awe-inspiring performance. Yet, what many are unaware of is the remarkable story behind his name, a name that echoes the legacy of Indian cricket.

The Indian connection

Rachin Ravindra, a cricketer of Indian origin born in Wellington, has deep-rooted connections with the cricket-crazy nation, stemming from his family's origins in Bengaluru. His very name is a tribute to two legends of Indian cricket – Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar – a testament to the profound love within his family for the sport.

Making his Test debut in India two years ago, Rachin has now marked his presence on the grand stage of the World Cup. Reflecting on his journey, he told PTI, "Looking back on my Test debut, it was a special and emotional time. Being able to play in India, the fanfare around the game here, to be able to experience that is pretty special. My parents come from Bangalore and it is amazing to play a World Cup here."

His outstanding performance against England in the World Cup's inaugural match underscores his remarkable cricketing talent. Undoubtedly, the desire for revenge fueled his spirit after the heart-wrenching loss in the 2019 World Cup final.

Ravindra takes revenge on England

The night of July 14, 2019, was etched in his memory as he watched New Zealand's agonizing defeat to England in the ODI World Cup final while sitting in a Bengaluru pub. At the age of 19, during an annual trip to India with his father's cricket club, the roller-coaster emotions of that final left an indelible mark.

Fast forward to 2023, and Rachin Ravindra has emerged as one of the quickest rising stars in the New Zealand cricket setup. Primarily a batter with a serious dedication to his left-arm spin, he has already showcased his talent with a captivating counter-attacking knock against the Three Lions. Notably, he also exhibited his grit by scoring a commendable 97 as an opener in the World Cup warm-up against Pakistan.

Rachin Ravindra has proven that he belongs at the highest level of the game. As the World Cup unfolds, teams would be wise to keep a vigilant eye on this rising star, who they can't afford to take lightly.
