Southee holds a crucial spot in New Zealand's 15-man squad for the ODI World Cup set to commence in India on October 5. The Black Caps kick off the tournament against reigning champions England, a rematch of the 2019 final.

In the run-up to the World Cup, Southee will be competing with fellow pacers like Trent Boult, Matt Henry, and Lockie Ferguson for his position in the New Zealand team, provided he makes a swift recovery from the thumb injury.
