Shreyas Iyer appointed as Punjab Kings captain for IPL 2025

Shreyas Iyer has been named the captain of Punjab Kings for the 2025 IPL season. Known for his leadership with previous franchises, Iyer aims to lead PBKS to their maiden IPL title, with the support of coach Ricky Ponting.

Shreyas Iyer appointed as Punjab Kings captain for IPL 2025

Shreyas Iyer, the stylish Indian batter, has been named the captain of Punjab Kings for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Known for his dynamic batting, Iyer was the second most expensive player in the previous IPL auction, with Punjab Kings securing his services for ₹26.75 crore.

The announcement was made on the popular reality show Big Boss, where Iyer was accompanied by teammates Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh. Expressing his excitement, Iyer shared his gratitude for the trust shown by the franchise.

"I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with coach [Ricky] Ponting… The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title," Iyer told ESPNCricinfo.

Iyer’s Leadership Journey in IPL: Iyer's IPL career began with Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) in 2015. In 2018, he was handed the captaincy and led the team to three consecutive playoff finishes, including a runner-up finish in 2020.

With 70 matches as captain across two franchises, Iyer has achieved 38 wins, 29 losses, and 2 draws. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title last year.

During his time with DC, Iyer’s leadership, combined with his collaboration with coach Ricky Ponting, transformed the franchise into a force to be reckoned with. Punjab Kings are now banking on this proven partnership to bring success to the team.

"Shreyas has a great mind for the game. His proven capabilities as captain will enable the team to deliver. I have enjoyed my time with Iyer in the past in IPL, and I look forward to working with him again. With his leadership and the talent in the squad, I am excited about the seasons ahead," said Ponting, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
