Paris Saint-Germain's season is ending with celebrations after a record 11th French title, but it's been one of the most fraught and tension-filled campaigns for many years that saw fans turning on the players, including soccer great Lionel Messi, and the club president.
PSG's 1-1 draw at Strasbourg on Saturday secured the trophy with a round to spare and took the Paris club past Saint-&Eacute;tienne's 10 titles. But perhaps this season will mostly be remembered for the many low points.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not been the best season for PSG," captain Marquinhos said recently.
Coach Christophe Galtier was hired to oversee a new era after bigger-name managers had failed to secure a coveted first Champions League title for the club.
Galtier pledged there would be no favors for star players but he ended up falling short in Europe anyway, and even had to fight for his job at the end of a troubled first season. Galtier is not expected to be in charge for a second campaign.
HOME LOSSES AND ARGUMENTS Parc des Princes was once a fortress for PSG but not this season, as it lost three home games in the league.
Players were jeered off the field after home defeats, including back-to-back losses to Rennes and Lyon without even scoring a goal. Even Lorient, a modest side which finished in 10th place, won 3-1 in Paris.
Rennes beat PSG home and away, while a 3-1 defeat in Monaco saw players Marquinhos and Neymar arguing with sporting director Luis Campos.
Campos was exasperated at the poor showing of the team after it trailed 3-0 at halftime in one of the worst PSG performances since Qatari investors QSI took charge 12 years ago.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s nothing to hide,&rdquo; Marquinhos said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve slacked off at times during games. That sums up the season well.&rdquo; Saint-Etienne won the last of its 10 titles in 1981 when former France great Michel Platini was in the team.
FANS TARGET MESSI When results were going poorly, some of the fans' anger was targeted toward Messi, who was seen to be underperforming after his return from winning the World Cup with Argentina.
And yet it was his goal against Strasbourg that ended up clinching the title, underlining his status once again as arguably the sport's biggest star. It was also Messi's 496th league goal in Europe and broke Cristiano Ronaldo's scoring record for Europe's top five leagues.
But it wasn't long ago that the record seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi became a target for fans, and then was briefly suspended by the club for an unapproved trip to Saudi Arabia.
Messi is not expected to take up the option for an extra year on the contract he signed two years ago, and next Saturday's home game against Clermont is expected to be his last. This season, Messi has 16 league goals and 16 assists with one game left.
The club's hard-core ultras even boycotted games after a disagreement with the hierarchy.
They argued that president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who for long has been perceived as over-protective of PSG's star players, refused to listen to their demands.
Some ultras went too far by protesting outside Brazil star Neymar&rsquo;s residence.
But it symbolized how unhappy many PSG fans became.
RUN OF DEFEATS Unbeaten before the World Cup started in November, PSG has lost nine matches overall in 2023.
&ldquo;A lot of things changed after the World Cup," Marquinhos said. &ldquo;It was very demanding in terms of energy, emotions and we were unable to maintain our level.&rdquo; The rot started on New Year's Day when host Lens played PSG off the field in a 3-1 win that exposed glaring defensive limitations that the team's attack has masked for several years.
PSG was eliminated in the last-16 of the Champions League for the second straight season, losing home and away to Bayern Munich without scoring a goal.
INCONSISTENT RIVALS Galtier's side was knocked out of the French Cup by bitter rival Marseille, and could have lost the league title as well if its challengers had been more consistent.
Marseille won eight straight away games, one short of its own record, but dropped a slew of points at home and let PSG off the hook. PSG lost at home to Brest on Saturday.
Also, Lens dominated at Parc des Princes in April before a clumsy red card gifted PSG the initiative and it won 3-1.
Without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Kylian Mbapp&eacute;, who became PSG&rsquo;s all-time leading scorer and has the most league goals this season, PSG could have lost the title.
Mbapp&eacute; has netted a league-high 28 goals with one game left.
DAMAGED REPUTATION PSG's home losses in the league heaped more pressure on Galtier and dented a well-earned reputation as one France's best coaches.
He led Lille to the title against the odds in 2021 and was unbeaten for Nice in three games against PSG last season, knocking PSG out of the French Cup.
But the fact that he was not even among the five nominees for coach of the season reflected how poorly PSG has played at times this campaign, where it was often rescued by Mbapp&eacute;'s goals.
WHO'S NEXT? Should Galtier leave, his replacement will become PSG&rsquo;s eighth coach under its Qatari ownership.

Shah said that the future of the 2023 edition will be decided after a meeting with the ACC members and the Associate nations.

The schedule and venues for the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India are expected to be announced during the final of the World Test Championship in London, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Saturday after the board's Special General Meeting (SGM) here.
A decision on the Asia Cup 2023, to be held before the World Cup, will also be taken in the coming days as representatives of some of the Asian Cricket Council members are here for the IPL final, to be played on Sunday between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.
"The venues for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 will be decided at a press conference during the ICC World Test Championship Final. The complete schedule for the tournament will also be revealed," Shah said.
"The future of the Asia Cup 2023 will be decided once we have a meeting with the ACC members (Test playing nations) and the Associate nations," Shah added.
The BCCI secretary informed that 15 stadiums have been shortlisted for improvement in basic facilities for the fans, keeping them in mind and more stadiums will be added at a later stage. Grant Thornton has been given the task for this purpose.
The BCCI will also be announcing specific committees in a week's time, which will handle the 2023 World Cup in India and the Women's Premier League, along with a committee to draft the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) policy.
Shah informed, "As far as the venues for the ICC Cricket World Cup are concerned, each office-bearer will be responsible for each venue. We are looking at all the metros as venues for the tournament." "We will create a committee to structure the POSH policy. The draft is ready, it will be presented before the AGM for ratification and necessary approvals," he added.
Additionally, the proposed limited-overs series between India and Afghanistan will be held before the World Cup, but the dates and venues are yet to be worked out.
Shah added that the impact player rule in this IPL has been appreciated by all teams and players, which has resulted in a record number of totals in excess of 200, with the boundaries and sixes also crossing the 1,000 and 2,000-mark.

PV Sindhu couldn't showcase her aggressive game against Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung as she faced defeat in the semi finals of the Malaysia Masters

Star Indian shuttler HS Prannoy entered the men's singles final of the Malaysia Masters after his opponent Christian Adinata of Indonesia conceded the semifinal match following a nasty knee injury on Saturday.
World number 9 Prannoy was leading 19-17 when Adinata lost his footing while landing after a jump return and his left knee buckled, leaving the Indonesian shuttler grimacing in pain.
The 21-year-old Adinata, a 2019 World Junior Championships winner, was quickly attended by Prannoy and the Indonesian coach before being eventually wheeled out of the court.
Prannoy will now take on the winner of the other semifinal match between China's Weng Hong Yang and Chinese Taipei's Lin Chun-Yi in the final on Sunday.
It will be Prannoy's first final of the season and second since the runner-up finish at the Swiss Open last year.
Double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu, however, couldn't make it to the women's singles finals after suffering a 14-21 17-21 loss to Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.
It was a second successive loss for Sindhu following seven wins against the tricky world number 9 Indonesian.
It was a one-way traffic for Prannoy, who was off to a flying start, leading 11-1 in a jiffy. However after the break, it was Aditana, who accumulated points in buckets, taking seven of the next nine points.
A jump cross court smash helped Prannoy find his confidence back but unforced errors and Adinata also playing some smart shots saw the Indonesian making it 10-14.
Adinata was quick in his returns and played a few cross court winners and a body smash. An on-the-line return on the backline saw him make it 14-15 before he drew parity at 16-16 when Prannoy went wide again.
Prannoy dominated the short exchanges next to lead 19-17 before the match ended abruptly following the injury to Adinata.
Sindhu finds Tunjung too hot to handle. A two-time former winner here, Sindhu couldn't play her aggressive game with Tunjung managing to keep control of the rallies with her solid defence and produce her tricky strokes to finish points.
The Indian took a 3-0 lead early on but it soon evaporated with Tunjung producing some exquisite shots to turn the tables.
The Indonesian tried to drag Sindhu from corner to corner to lead 6-4. But she hit wide and Sindhu also hit a delectable reverse slice to make it 6-6.
Tunjung tried to mix her strokes to keep Sindhu guessing but the Indian defended well to hold her fort, moving to 9-7. She entered the break at 11-8 with a straight smash and a body return.
However, things changed after the change of sides. A flat forehand punch clear helped Tunjung draw parity before she quickly moved to 15-12 with a series of attacking returns.
Another straight smash from Tunjung was followed by a winner from Sindhu but the Indonesian held the momentum with some attacking winners. Tunjung grabbed six game points with Sindhu finding the net and she converted it with another winner.
The second game started on an even keel before Tunjung suffered an injury on his forehand at 5-5. But it had no affect on the Indonesian, who kept things under control to enter the break with a 11-9 cushion.
Coach Vidhi Chaudhary kept motivating Sindhu but it didn't have much affect on the Indian as Tunjung continued to make life difficult for her.
The Indonesian looked a bit tired and made some errors but she didn't allow the match slip away.
She soon grabbed six match points after Sindhu erred again. The Indian saved three with two cross court returns. However, Sindhu missed the net shot after another engrossing rally to sign off at the semifinal stage.

There was chaos at Delhi's Jantar Mantar after a <a href="https://www.editorji.com/sports-news/wrestlers-sakshi-malik-sangeeta-vinesh-phogat-detained-by-police-in-delhi-1685255980235">scuffle broke out between wrestlers &amp; police officers</a>, who were captured on camera pushing and shoving each other.
The police officials were also captured clearing the protest site at Jantar Mantar, where the wrestlers had been staying since they resumed their protest against former WFI Chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh on April 23.
The security at Jantar Mantar had already been beefed up following the wrestlers' call to hold a Women's Mahapanchayat in front of the new Parliament building, which was inaugurated by PM Modi on Sunday. The cops had also previously stated that they will not allow the protestors to disrupt the event at any cost as no permission had been granted to them.
The cops also said the grapplers have been detained for violating law and order since they breached their security cordon &amp; broke through the barriers while trying to march toward the new Parliament building.
According to Special CP (Law &amp; Order) Dependra Pathak, the cops will take legal action after an inquiry.

Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik was also captured talking to the reporters from the window of the bus. The wrestlers were on their way to the new Parliament building for their Women&rsquo;s Mahapanchayat that was scheduled for Sunday. However, they were stopped by cops midway and their supporters were detained.
Vinesh Phogat, who spoke to the media gathered at the protest site, had earlier said, &lsquo;We just want to carry out a peaceful protest. We have not broken any (police) barricades nor do we intend to. Our protest is peaceful." Meanwhile, Delhi Police had made a prior statement where they had said that they will not let anything hamper the inauguration of the new Parliament building, not even the wrestlers&rsquo; protest.
