From Rejection to Redemption - Varun Chakravarthy's Epic Comeback for Indian Cricket Team

What happens when a cricketer is written off, only to return with a vengeance. Varun Chakravarthy, India’s mystery spinner, is rewriting the script on comebacks.

Once dismissed as a one-season wonder, he’s now the name on everyone’s lips—even touted for a spot in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

After a stellar IPL 2024 season with KKR, where Chakravarthy played a pivotal role in their title victory, his resurgence was undeniable. This time, India’s selectors couldn’t ignore him. He was recalled to the T20I squad, and his comeback has been nothing short of electric.

His recent performances against Bangladesh and South Africa have shown just how much he’s evolved, proving he’s no longer just a mystery spinner—he’s a match-winner.

But Chakravarthy’s path to this point wasn’t smooth. His journey began as an underdog with no formal cricket training, breaking into the IPL with Kings XI Punjab in 2019. Playing just one game, his potential remained untapped until he moved to KKR in 2020. That season, he exploded onto the scene, taking 17 wickets across 13 games, including a stunning five-wicket haul that introduced him as one of the league’s most intriguing talents.

By 2021, his unique skills earned him a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Expectations were high, but the experience turned into a nightmare. He failed to meet the hype, and after a disappointing run in the tournament, he was dropped from the squad.

To many, Chakravarthy looked like another flash in the pan.

But KKR just weren’t ready to give up on him. They stood by Chakravarthy, making him an integral part of their strategy. And in IPL 2024, he silenced his critics in style.

His clutch bowling performances, especially at critical moments, helped KKR lift the trophy.

His lethal spin was back, and he was now playing with renewed confidence.

Calls for his return to the national team grew louder. Yet, surprisingly, he was passed over - even when India named a second-string squad against Zimbabwe. Fans were baffled, and Varun himself was crushed, taking to social media with a stinging message: “I wish I had a paid PR agency.”

But everything changed when Gautam Gambhir stepped in. With Gambhir’s influence, the national selectors finally made the call for the Bangladesh series, and this time, Varun was prepared. And his T20 International performances since have been nothing short of brilliant, showcasing his growth and maturity. He has emerged as a go-to bowler, particularly in the middle overs, where his variations have been nearly impossible to read. The way he bamboozled the Proteas is there for all to see.

Even KKR wasted no time in retaining him ahead of the 2025 mega auction, betting on his value for seasons to come. Dinesh Karthik has also rallied behind him, calling for his inclusion in India's Champions Trophy squad, stating that leaving him out would be a “grave error.”

Life's come full circle for Varun Chakravarthy. From being dropped after a tough World Cup debut to becoming a key figure for both KKR and India, Varun Chakravarthy’s story is a powerful tale of resilience. His journey is proof that setbacks don’t define you - it’s the comeback that counts.
