Australia captain Aaron Finch announces retirement from ODI cricket

Australia captain Aaron Finch announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Saturday. The third and final ODI against New Zealand on Sunday will be his last 50-over game in international cricket.

However, the hard-hitting opener will continue to lead the Aussies in T20Is.

While making the announcement, the 35-year-old batter said that he could have tried playing another series and retired at the iconic MCG, but it would not have been right.

'But that's never been my style to be self-indulgent in any kind of way", Finch added.

Finch's shock decision has come on the back of his lean patch in the 50-over format in 2022. In the last seven innings, he managed to score only 26 runs at an average of just 3.7, including three ducks.

He led the Australian team in 54 ODIs and the 50-over match against New Zealand will be his 146th game.

With 17 centuries, he is only behind Ricky Ponting's 29, David Warner and Mark Waugh's 18 tons each.

He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at the MCG in 2013.
