Portrush Parade Prompts British Open Tee Time Changes

Portrush's loyalist parade coincides with the British Open, leading to revised golf tee times for minimal disruption. The R&A collaborates with local entities for seamless events despite unchanged parade timing and local price hikes.

Portrush Parade Prompts British Open Tee Time Changes

Portrush, Northern Ireland, July 16 (PTI) – In a bid to mitigate potential disruptions during Portrush's annual loyalist parade this Saturday, the third round of the British Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club will feature revised tee times. Organizers of the world’s oldest major golf tournament are working to ensure minimal interference as the march, involving 77 bands and around 2,000 members of the Portrush Sons of Ulster organization, is slated to coincide with the tournament's conclusion for the day.

The parade is set to begin at 8:30 p.m. local time, coinciding with the departure of thousands of golf enthusiasts. With an expected attendance of more than 275,000 spectators this week, the R&A, responsible for organizing the British Open, decided to make minor schedule adjustments to prevent logistical complications.

Mark Darbon, the R&A's chief executive, stated that the adjustments are minor, moving tee times forward by about 15 minutes to facilitate a smoother flow for both events. "We've collaborated extensively with local organizers and various agencies to ensure both the tournament and the parade proceed seamlessly," Darbon noted.

Previously, it was reported by the Belfast Telegraph that the R&A had offered 20,000 pounds (approximately USD 27,000) to the Portrush Sons of Ulster to reschedule their parade. The offer was declined. When questioned, Darbon emphasized the R&A's commitment to supporting both events' smooth operation and acting as responsible members of the community during their visit.

Despite the coinciding events, he confirmed there were no heightened security concerns, asserting that spectator safety remains paramount.

Price Concerns

This significant event is a boon for Portrush and its local businesses. However, there have been reports of price surges at some popular dining establishments, sparking visitor dissatisfaction. The Guardian newspaper highlighted one case where the price of a burger at Ramore Wine Bar shot from 7.95 pounds (USD 10.65) to 17.95 pounds (USD 24).

The Ramore Restaurant Group, which operates the bar and other well-known venues like the Harbour Bar, cited the need for extra staffing during the busy week as a reason for the increase. Following the outcry, they announced revisions and adjustments to the menu.
