World Laughter Day 2024: 5 reasons why laughter is the best medicine

World Laughter Day is devoted to the art of laughter and its infectious nature. It rejuvenates and heals people. To help celebrate the spirit of laughing, every year the first Sunday of the month is celebrated as World Laughter Day. World Laughter Day was established in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian physician and the founder of the Laughter Yoga movement.

This laughter day, let us learn 5 scientific reasons why laughter is indeed the best medicine.

Why laughter is the best medicine

Boosts immune system

Laughter has been linked to enhanced immune function. Research suggests that laughter increases the production of immune cells and antibodies, thereby strengthening the body's defences against infections and illnesses.

Improves cardiovascular health

Laughing improves blood flow and blood vessel function. When we laugh our blood vessels dilate and increase blood flow to other body organs. A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology found that laughter may have protective effects against heart disease by improving blood vessel function and reducing inflammation.

Provides pain relief

Laughter has been shown to alleviate pain by stimulating the release of endorphins, which act as natural painkillers. Laughter also promotes muscle relaxation, reduces muscle tension, and may increase pain tolerance. Research has that humour and laughter can reduce pain during medical procedures and chronic pain conditions.

Promotes social and emotional well-being

Sharing laughter with strangers or loved ones can improve your bond. Laughter also promotes emotional well-being by counteracting negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

Reduces stress

Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can temporarily relieve pain. Laughter also reduces the production of stress hormones like cortisol, which can have detrimental effects on the body when chronically elevated.
