As heat related cases rise in India, Meteorological Department issues warning against rising temperature

Hospitals in India are witnessing a surge in patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. Experts have warned that the number of cases could increase due to the scorching heat in the coming days.

The India Meteorological Department issues warning

The India Meteorological Department has warned about a higher-than-usual number of heatwaves in May across several states. Heatwaves pose a significant health risk, leading to a surge in patients suffering from several conditions like high fever, dehydration and even seizures.

The National Centre for Disease Control ( NCDC) has asked states to organize a task force meeting for updating and approving a heat-health action plan, including standard operating procedures for heatwaves.

Precautions to take against heatwave

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolyte-rich beverages.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours and stay in air-conditioned or well-ventilated spaces.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool.
  • Use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when going outside to protect against sunburn.
  • Keep your home cool by using fans, shades, or air conditioning, and close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day.
  • Check on elderly neighbours, children, and pets frequently to ensure they are staying cool and hydrated.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles, as temperatures inside can quickly reach dangerous levels.
  • Take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature if necessary.
Eat light meals that are easy to digest and avoid heavy, hot foods.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and seek medical attention immediately if you or someone else shows symptoms.
