World Hello Day 2023: Why do we say hello when we answer a call and who started it first; know it here

Before the telephone became widespread, there was no standard greeting for answering the phone because the technology didn't exist. People would use various greetings or phrases. However, as the telephone became more common, the convenience of having a standard greeting for answering calls became apparent.

Who said the first ‘Hello’?

Now if we talk about why Hello is said on the phone, then the credit goes to Thomas Edison. After inventing the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell wanted to use ‘Ahoy’ as the greeting to answer a phone call. However, one time Thomas Edison misheard Ahoy and in 1877 proposed to say Hello and thereafter, it became a common practice to say Hello as soon as we pick up a call.
