Ramadan 2024: Tips to manage diabetes while you fast during this holy month

In just a few days, the holy month of Ramadan will begin. Muslims around the world observe a fast and pray to their Lord during this time. Fasting during Ramadan has many benefits as it gives the digestive system the much-needed rest and helps to detoxify the body. If you are fasting this Ramadan and are also a diabetic, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure that there is no sudden drop or spike in your blood sugar levels.

Let us learn about what foods diabetics can have at sehri (before fasting) and iftaar (after fasting). However, before making any dietary changes, make sure to consult a doctor for professional advice.

What to have at sehri?

It is important to have a balanced meal before you begin your fasting. Some good options are fish, chicken, low-fat dairy like yoghurt, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.

What to have at iftaar?

To break your fast, rely on having healthy options instead of oily ones. Opt for foods rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Make sure to avoid sweets right when you break your fast.

Other things to keep in mind

Make sure to keep your blood sugar levels in check. Watch out for signs like dizziness, blurry vision, and irregular heartbeat. You should also ensure that you drink at least 8-10 glasses of water in total. Never overeat when you break your fast during iftaar.
