Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed on May 28th each year. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of good menstrual hygiene management and breaking the stigma associated with menstruation. It was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2013.

Expert shares how menstrual health affects fertility

It is important to maintain a healthy menstrual cycle to have a safe and healthy life. Dr Kalyani Shrimali, Fertility expert, Nova IVF Fertility spoke with Editorji about menstrual health and its effects on fertility.

Dr Kalyani Shrimali, said it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle. She said, “The first and the foremost, as always is a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can promote regular menstrual cycles and improve your fertility."

The doctor also said that if you have concerns about irregular cycles or if you are planning for pregnancy then you should visit your health care provider or the consultant regularly. They can offer guidance, conduct necessary tests and suggest treatments if needed.

At the same time Dr Kalyani Shrimali said that understanding your menstrual cycle and its phases is also important. It can help or empower to make informed decisions about your reproductive health and fertility.

How do healthy menstrual hygiene practices help?

Good menstrual hygiene practices, such as using clean menstrual products, changing them regularly, washing hands before and after handling menstrual products, and maintaining overall genital hygiene, are essential for preventing infections and maintaining reproductive health, thus supporting fertility.
