The name 'Langra' for this popular variety of mangoes in India has an interesting origin, as recounted by veteran mango cultivator Padma Shri Haji Kalimullah Khan.

How 'Langra Aam' Got Its Name

Around 250-300 years ago in Banaras, a lame man planted a mango seed near his home after enjoying the fruit. The mangoes from this tree turned out to be exceptionally juicy and sweet, quickly gaining fame.

Since the farmer was known as 'Langra' by the locals, the mangoes came to be called 'Langra' aam, reflecting their association with him. Langra mangoes are now cultivated across various states in India, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh.

How to identify langra aam

The Langda mango is characterized by its oval shape, with a slight pointedness at the bottom. Even when fully ripe, it retains its green colour, and its skin is thin.
