Delhi water shortage: 5 Things you can do to preserve water during the heatwave

Summer is at its peak in Delhi as temperatures touch 50 degrees. A red alert has been issued at many spots in North India. A water shortage has also been declared in Delhi, and the government has warned residents not to waste water amid high demand.

As a responsible citizen, you can also do your part and save water. Here are some tips.

5 small but useful tips to save water during summer

Save water, take short showers

We all love to take a long, cold bath. But during the summer months when water is sparse, avoid taking long showers. If possible, regulate water usage by skipping the shower and using a bucket and mug.

Aim for a shower that is 5 minutes or less.

Full loads for washing machine and dishwasher

Avoid running your washing machine or dishwasher at half capacity. One should also avoid washing clothes too often in the summer as harmful chemicals harm the water systems. Contaminated water supplies can lead to the spread of waterborne illnesses and other health hazards.

Do not thaw food under running water

This summer stop thawing your frozen food under running water. Plan ahead and thaw in the refrigerator or use the defrost setting on your microwave.

Water your lawn wisely

Do not use hose pipes to water plants, instead use a bucket and mug to conserve water.

Fix leaks

If you have a leaky pipe at home, get help and get it fixed. Leaky pipes can cause water loss and may even increase your water bill.

Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast that heatwave conditions are expected to persist for another three or four days in the state. Officials from the Bihar Disaster Management Department advised people to avoid heat exposure, stay cool, and prevent dehydration.
