Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Mangubhai Patel emphasized the need for collective action to eliminate sickle cell disease, stating that trust, cooperation, and joint efforts are essential.
He was addressing the state-level conference held in Barwani on the occasion of World Sickle Cell Day. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav joined the event virtually from Indore.
During the programme, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Rajendra Shukla read out a message from President Smt. Droupadi Murmu and a citation recognizing the Madhya Pradesh government's efforts toward sickle cell eradication.
Golden Era of Tribal Welfare
Highlighting the government’s focus on tribal welfare, Governor Shri Patel said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership has ushered in a golden era for the tribal population.
“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is a dedicated and sensitive personality towards the welfare and empowerment of tribal life,” he said.
He appreciated the ongoing efforts under the Sickle Cell Eradication Mission and congratulated the state team for their commendable work.
Mantra for Eradication of Sickle Cell
Underlining the importance of awareness, Governor Shri Patel said that genetic card comparison before marriage, testing during pregnancy, and newborn screening within 72 hours of birth are crucial steps.
“Awareness is most necessary for the eradication of sickle cell,” he said.
He also advised patients to follow a healthy routine and urged parents to support children affected by the disease.
Appeal for Cooperation from Tribal Representatives
As a member of the tribal community himself, Governor Patel appealed to tribal representatives to participate actively in awareness campaigns.
He also urged the media to play a role in spreading information about the disease.
“I appeal to the representatives of the community to continuously, actively, and sensitively cooperate in the awareness efforts,” he said.
Youth Should Use Their Talent for Tribal Welfare
Governor Patel encouraged youth, especially medical students from the tribal community, to contribute through research and local awareness drives.
“Use their knowledge and talent for the welfare and development of their community,” he said, suggesting integration of awareness into educational curricula and institutional activities.
1 Crore 6 Lakh Citizens Screened in State: CM Dr. Yadav
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav highlighted that the state has screened over 1.06 crore citizens under the National Sickle Cell Eradication Mission–2047.
“In our society, there is a tradition of matching horoscopes before marriage. Now the time has come that along with the horoscope, the bride and groom’s ‘Sickle Cell Genetic Card’ must also be matched,” he said.
He added that the mission is not just about health but also social and economic upliftment, with interventions at screening, management, counseling, and awareness levels.
Dr. Yadav announced a new medical college in Khargone and mentioned he had intended to attend the event in person but was unable due to inclement weather.
Governor Patel Has Conducted Awareness Campaign at National Level
The Chief Minister praised Governor Patel for taking the campaign to a national level, especially benefiting tribal communities.
“Sickle cell disease is creating social and economic crises in tribal areas,” he said.
He noted the significant screening in Barwani district and the appointment of ‘Sickle Friends’ for localized outreach. A specialized testing unit has also been established at AIIMS Bhopal.
Food Processing Units Being Opened in Tribal Areas
In his address, the Chief Minister outlined developmental initiatives including irrigation projects, food processing units, and agricultural fairs. Farmers are receiving support through government procurement and subsidized solar pumps.
“To increase farmers' income, efforts are ongoing at all levels to encourage milk production in the state,” he said.
Approval of Promotion Pending for 9 Years of Government Employees/Officers
Dr. Yadav spoke on efforts to improve education, housing, and employment.
Promotions pending for nine years have been approved, clearing the way for recruitment on nearly two lakh posts. “Bicycles, scooters, and laptops are being distributed to meritorious students,” he added, emphasizing education reforms.
Ladli Sisters Will Receive Additional ₹250 on Rakshabandhan
The Chief Minister announced a ₹250 additional transfer for Ladli Sisters next month as part of Rakshabandhan celebrations. He also mentioned a ₹22 crore fund for Ekatma Dham and the implementation of prohibition in 19 religious towns.
“A campaign is ongoing to economically empower sisters and daughters,” he said.
Governor Patel Releases Guidelines for Sickle Cell Management
Governor Patel inaugurated the event with traditional rituals including lamp lighting and girl worship. He was welcomed with tributes reflecting tribal heritage by various dignitaries.
Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla read out President Murmu’s message and shared state performance figures: “Madhya Pradesh completed 97 lakh screenings, leading the nation. So far, screening of 1 crore 6 lakh citizens has been done.”
He also announced a new 100-day screening campaign starting July 1, aiming to cover 1.4 crore citizens. Over 2 lakh carriers and nearly 30,000 patients have been identified. “We will leave no stone unturned for the eradication of sickle cell,” said Shri Shukla.
Union Ministers Emphasize Public Participation
Skill Development Minister Shri Gautam Tetwal called for holistic public participation in fighting the disease. “Everyone must come forward in this fight,” he said.
Union Minister of State Smt. Savitri Thakur encouraged testing: “All citizens should take a pledge to completely eradicate sickle cell anemia. Do not hesitate, definitely get tested.”
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Scheduled Tribes Commission Chairman Shri Antar Singh Arya, Minister Shri Narendra Shivaji Patel, MPs, Rajya Sabha members, and Padma Shri awardee Mahesh Sharma. Some joined virtually from Indore.
