Veteran Telugu filmmaker K. Viswanath passes away at 92

Legendary Telugu filmmaker K. Viswanath, who is best known for iconic films like 'Sankarabharanam', 'Sagara', 'Swati Muthyam' among others, died at his residence in Hyderabad on Thursday. He was 92. Viswanath, five-time National Award winner, was suffering from age-related ailments.

Viswanath started his career as an audiographer for Vauhini Studios in Madras. After a brief stint as a sound engineer, he began filmmaking under director-screenwriter Adurthi Subba Rao. He worked as an assistant director on 1951 Telugu film ‘Pathala Bhairavi’.

‘Aatma Gowravam’ (1965) marked his directorial debut which went on to win the state Nandi award.

He became a national phenomenon with the 1980 Telugu film ‘Sankarabharanam’ that spoke about the gap between Carnatic music and Western music based on the perspective of people from two different generations.

‘Sankarabharanam’, which won four National awards, was later remade in Hindi as ‘Sur Sangam’, also directed by Viswanath.
